Japan: Famitsu sales for March (Top 5 Software, Top 3 Publisher, Hardware)

Famitsu – Software

Today, Famitsu published its monthly report on video games sales in Japan, for March 2017 (February 27th to March 26th). January and February were pretty calm overall, so the release of the Nintendo Switch in March certainly didn’t go unnoticed. In the Top 10, there’s two Nintendo Switch games:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #2, with over 300 000 units sold
  • 1-2-Switch at #5, with over 138 000 units sold

Those two games combined make up for more than 50% of total Software sales for Nintendo in March. Said sales topped 731 000 units, which means Nintendo was the 2nd most successful publisher.

Naturally, Capcom is #1 almost exclusively thanks to Monster Hunter XX, which ended up selling over 1.2 million units during its launch month. Sales of other games only amount to roughly 108 000 units: without Monster Hunter XX, Capcom would not even be in the Top 3…

  1. Nintendo Switch – 2
  2. PlayStation 4 – 2
  3. Nintendo 3DS – 1

Famitsu – Top 3 publishers

  1. Capcom – 1.308.000
  2. Nintendo – 731.000
  3. Square Enix – 278.000

Famitsu – Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling platform in March, which isn’t too surprising since this was its launch month. With 524 371 units sold, Nintendo’s home console is off to a decent start (especially given the many shortages), though it’s still too early for the company to celebrate.

Despite a pretty lackluster line-up, the Nintendo 3DS was the second best-selling platform in March with 159 402 units. That’s almost two times better than last year during the same month, though with a few days missing this year (Famitsu’s data only goes to March 26th for 2017, as opposed to March 29th for 2016), any direct comparison doesn’t hold much weight.

Still, it’s pretty good news for Nintendo that the Nintendo 3DS is doing so well during its 7th year on the market, and with Monster Hunter XX as the only notable release. As mentioned several times before, the Nintendo 2DS did help a fair bit, but the New Nintendo 3DS models also did pretty well.

Finally, with only 2 146 units sold, the Wii U sold 12 times less than it did last year during the same month, which already were all that great.
