Yo-kai Sangokushi: more details (Yo-kai, Story, Systems), screenshots, more

Yo-kai Watch SangokushiYesterday, Level-5 opened the full website for Yo-kai Sangokushi, its collaboration title with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. This allows us to get plenty of details about the game, including the story, the characters, the gameplay systems, and more. There’s also some additional screenshots, and a better picture for the boxart!

Story

It all begins with Jibanyan, USApyon, and Komasan living their life peacefully. One day, they find a mysterious book, called Yo-kai Sangokushi (Yo-kai Romance of the Three Kingdoms), and they get sucked inside. The world inside that book is full of wonders, but there’s a problem: the three Yo-kai have become separated due to some unknown power. In order to get back to their own world, they set out in search of each other. And thus begins a brand new adventure with Yo-kai in battle armor.

The screenshots on the website show Whisper meeting Keita in the park. The young boy is behaving in a strange way, and gives Whisper a cryptic message: “Come What May”. Another screenshot shows Whisper talking excitedly to Jibanyan and Komasan: it turns out that the key to this story can be found in the library…

This is where Komasan finds the mysterious Yo-kai Sangokushi book, and we get to see them getting sucked in inside. Then, Jibanyan wakes up, and realise he’s wearing battle armor.

* as mentioned previously, those are the three protagonists. You can chose to play as one of them, which has an impact on the beginning of the story. They also have their own abilities.

Gameplay systems

First, let’s start with the battle system proper. As seen in the first screenshots, the battle screen uses the same type of grid fans of turn-based strategy/tactical games know pretty well. The blue squares indicate where your Yo-kai can move to, while the Red squares show the enemy units (called “Bushou” in Japanese). If you move next to an enemy unit, you can attack them.

Next, we have Magic. This is a pretty powerful command, that can only be used a certain amount of times per battle. For example: “Fire” is a really powerful attack with range, which allows you to hit enemies from a distance.

As for Assist, it can be used to go help an ally in trouble, but also to block the path of enemies. You can prevent them from moving altogether, but unfortunately, it looks like you cannot use Assist as many times as you want… You will have to think carefully before using either Magic or Assist, as they will most likely be key in winning battles.

And just like in the mainline Yo-kai Watch, there’s a gauge to fill during battles. When it’s filled, you can use Soultimate attacks, such as Jibanyan’s Paws of Fury. Depending on the Yo-kai, the effects of these special attacks will change. You can deal damage to enemies, but also heal your allies.

The website also has some advice to players. Before heading to battle, it’s important to check out enemies: how many of them? How powerful? If you’re outnumbered, you will most likely lose the battle, so it’s better to avoid the group of enemies if you are. In that case, you should get some ally to join you, in order to outnumber enemies (such as 6 vs 4), and make sure victory is yours.

Finally, there’s a Capsule Toy Machine in the mysterious world of Yo-kai Sangokushi. Just like in the mainline entries, you can use it to get some new Yo-kai, including some pretty rare ones (such as Goldenyan). Of course, they all correspond to a specific warrior from the Romance of the Three Kingdom series.

Finally, here’s some more screenshots for the game, and a better version of the boxart:

As a bonus, some extra screencaps from the website:
