Super Mario RPG: some additional details (bestiary, soundtrack selection, easy mode)

Super Mario RPG was showcased during the latest Nintendo Direct, on September 14th/15th. Following the presentation, Nintendo launched the official website in Japan, providing us with some additional footage. And that’s not all: Nintendo also shared a Topics post for the game, giving us some extra details about the game (not featured in the Ninendo Direct!).

First, we have the Monster List. This handy list provides you with all sorts of information about the monsters encountered in the game. But as with similar bestiary features in other RPGs, you first need to use a special ability (namely, Mallow’s Thought Peek ability) before their respective pages fill up with information about them.

At first, you only get basic information (such as the monster’ stats and movement type), but in time, the page will also list its weakness(es) and even its thoughts! Those little comments were written specifically for the Nintendo Switch remake, and allow you to uncover some surprising things about the monsters encountered in the game!

Next, let’s get musical. Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch features brand new arrangements by Yoko Shimomura (who also composed the music of the original game on the SNES). But if you don’t like those, or simply want a walk down memory lane, you can switch back to the original soundtrack at any time!

Here’s a video clip showcasing that feature in action:

And once you’ve cleared the game, you will unlock the Sound Player, which allows you to listen to both the original and arranged tracks to your heart’s content. However, it appears that some of the tracks are locked, and you first need to do something before you can listen to them…

And finally, some good news for players who struggle with RPG (or simply find the game too hard to their liking): Super Mario RPG is getting two difficulty options:

  • Breezy: makes it easier for you to level up and defeat enemies, allowing you to advance through the story more easily
  • Normal

And you don’t need to worry about missing on anything: the difficulty selection has no bearing on the story. And if you ever find the game too hard/too easy for you, you can always switch between Breezy and Normal difficulties at any time during your adventure.

Finally, here’s some more screenshots:

Super Mario RPG (Switch) comes out on November 17th worldwide.
