Super Mario Bros. Wonder: launch sales (#1: fastest-selling Super Mario game in Europe + Japanese debut)

In this post, you will find all relevant sales data for Super Mario Bros. Wonder at launch: official press release/statements from Nintendo, data from tracking companies when available (Famitsu, etc.), and more. It will be updated as new data is shared, so keep checking back!

October 26th

Nintendo has just announced that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is off to a great start in Europe: it’s no less than the fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in the region. That statement only covers sales during the first 3 days, and includes both retail shipments and digital sales.

Unfortunately, no actual sales data is provided. Still, it’s a remarkable milestone for the game and the Super Mario series as a whole, which shows that the Nintendo Switch isn’t quite done with record-breaking sales!

For the record, before Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the fastest-selling Super Mario game in Europe was Super Mario Odyssey (back in 2017).

In Japan, Famitsu reports that the game sold 638.634 units at launch. However, unlike the statement for Europe, that number does not include digital sales, so total sales during the first 3 days should be a fair bit higher (around 900,000-1,000,000 depending on how big the digital split is).

In comparison, here’s how previous 2D Mario games sold at launch in Japan:

01./00. [NDS] New Super Mario Bros. <ACT> (Nintendo) {2006.05.25} (¥4.571) – 865.024 / NEW <75,10%>
01./00. [WII] New Super Mario Bros. Wii <ACT> (Nintendo) {2009.12.03} (¥5.524) – 936.734 / NEW <85,40%>
01./00. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2012.07.28} (¥4.571) – 430.185 / NEW <42,60%>
02./00. [WIU] New Super Mario Bros. U # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2012.12.08} (¥5.700) – 170.563 / NEW <59,60%>
01./00. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe <New Super Mario Bros. U \ New Super Luigi U> <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.01.11} (¥5.980) – 185.855 / NEW <60-80%>

Given digital sales were not a thing on Nintendo DS and Wii, Super Mario Bros. Wonder may very well have become the best-selling 2D Mario game at launch in Japan if you factor in digital sales.
