Star Fox Zero will have modes for both newcomers and experienced players

Star Fox ZeroEarlier this month, TIME published a rather lengthy interview with Shigeru Miyamoto about Star Fox Zero. In this interview, he reveals that the game will feature a mode for newcomers, who will get to play with an invicible Arwing:

So for instance there’ll be a way for them to get an invincible Arwing, so that they can fly through and see the levels.

And for players who are looking for a good challenge, there will also be some modes with some extra challenge to spice things up:

We’re also preparing modes for Star Fox fans looking for an even harder challenge, such as a ship that does more damage, but which also takes more damage.

In the interview, Shigeru Miyamoto explains that he’s not really supportive of making a game easier just so that players who don’t often play games can have fun. For him, it’s important that the challenge remains… well, challenging, for it to be fun:

I’m not very supportive of simply making a game easy so that people who don’t play games can play the game themselves. Obviously part of the fun of taking on a challenge is that the challenge has to be a hurdle that you overcome. Simply lowering the hurdle doesn’t necessarily mean that the challenge will be fun. What’s fun is you mastering the skill and having that sense of accomplishment—of achieving something that’s difficult.”

It’s for this reason that the co-op mode or Star Fox Guard were added/created: they allow unexperienced players to still enjoy the Star Fox Zero universe even if they cannot deal with the level of challenge the main game offers.

The interview covers a wide range of topics:

  • Star Fox Zero is not a sequel or a prequel, but instead of re-imagining of Star Fox 64
  • the plot involves teleporters (something Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned during the Nintendo Direct)
  • Star Fox Guard is what has become of Project Guard. Miyamoto also mentions Project Giant Robot, and explains that “Project Giant Robot’ was something we started as a second project, and unfortunately we haven’t yet decided to turn that into a full game”
  • Star Fox Zero no longer has a TV series structure
  • Star Fox Zero puts the focus on replaying the levels, not just in order to get better scores, but also unlock alternate paths in the levels
  • the two screens gameplay was thoroughly play-tested and finessed
  • and more
