Splatoon: details about Splat Zones and footage

Now that the new batch of Splatoon previews is live, we have some additional details about the game itself. This includes info about a brand new game mode shown for the first time during the press event last week!

It’s called “Splat Zones”: a brand new Ranked Battle Mode, which is somewhat similar to the Turf Wars… except that the area contested is a small square at the centre of the map. It’s basically a “King of the Valley” mode: when a team paints the area, a timer starts, and if they manage to defend it until the countdown’s over, they win the match. According to Eurogamer, this makes for a “different kind of anarchy, one that’s fast-paced and more focused”.

Unfortunately, Splat Zones won’t be available at launch: it’ll come when enough players have reached Level 10 in multiplayer.

SplatoonAs for the Hero Mode (Single Player), it introduces various puzzles. As explained in previous reports (Famitsu, etc.), Splatoon in Single Player is more akin to a puzzle/platformer than a pure third-person shooter. There’s various mechanics like fans that require you to shoot ink at them to activate platforms, jets of ink that sent you flying and more. As for the central hub from which all game modes can be accessed, it’s called Inkopolis. Unfortunately, it’s been confirmed that the game wouldn’t have any voice chat at all, even with friends.

Finally, here’s some gameplay videos:
