On July 12th, the Director of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux announced that videos for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux would be shared on a regular basis on Twitter. Those videos will showcase new elements and/or changes introduced in this Nintendo 3DS remake. In this post, you will find the various videos (but also artworks and screenshots) shared!

In this post, you will find an archive of the updates for the period going from July 12th to August 13th!

August 11th

Over the past few days, Atlus shared a couple of videos:

  • Arvine, from the Materials Team (voiced by Masaki Terasoma). He uses various materials to synthetize equipment for the crew. (In the Japanese version) He finishes many of his sentences with “zeyo”. He’s always full of spirit.

  • the second video showcases something called Commander Skills. The Director explains that they added those to reinforce the role of your character (the one who controls demons in battle. They wanted them to play a more active part in battles.

  • the third video introduces Bagaboo, a unique demon bullied by other demonds. He ends up protecting the protagonist and Jimenez during their exploration. By interacting with Jimenez, he gradually learns how to speak again. It looks like he gradually becomes friends with Jimenez over the course of the game.

  • the fourth and last video introduces Mastema (voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa). A mysterious demon who presents himself as an angel, and somehow ends up assisting the protagonist. But who is he?

Over the past few days, Atlus shared a couple of videos:

  • the first one shows Button Shortcuts, that you can use for a more pleasing gameplay experience. For example, you can choose to move around dungeons without having to open doors (by having them open automatically by pressing Up on the D-Pad), or you can set X to Field Save (so you don’t have to open the menu to save).
  • the second one shows a new dungeon, where a new demo can be found: Demeter (voiced by Mai Kadowaki), based on the goddess of agriculture, harvest, fertility and sacred law. For those who don’t know, Demeter means “Mother Earth” in ancient Greek.

You will find both in the YouTube playlist below!

Over the past few days, Atlus shared a few videos:

  • the first one shows what is called the Field App, which helps you during exploration (by warning you about nearby traps, auto-filling the map, etc.). It’s something the development team really wanted to include, even though the Director himself is the kind of player who likes to “suffer” with a good challenge. Of course, if you’re like him and would rather have as authentic an experience as possible, you can disable the app at any time. You will find it in the YouTube playlist below!
  • the second one shows a feature called “Field Save”. Basically, it allows you to save even while exploring, which is great if you have to stop suddenly for any reason, or if you simply want to play it safe. You will find it in the YouTube playlist below!

Finally, the third one shows a feature that will please fans of the original, on Nintendo DS… passwords! It’s actually something the development received quite a lot of inquiries about, and the Director is pleased to confirm that not only passwords are in the Nintendo 3DS remake, but also that you can transfer demons from the original to the remake. That way, you will be able to start a new journey with your old companions! However, there’s a catch: some passwords will not work, it seems (most likely those from distributions). You will find it in the YouTube playlist below!

Last week, Atlus shared another comparison video for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. This time around, it’s the Event Scenes that are compared. The Director explains that they added various elements to make those Event Scenes more “dramatic”. They also reworked the various sound effects, which helps give them more impact. The same can be said for the crew members in the background.

You will find the video in the YouTube playlist below!

Over the past few days, Atlus shared two videos. The first one showcases Arthur (voiced by Takehito Koyasu), the management program that assists the Research Team. No matter the circumstances, it always offers an adequate plan of action, in a calm manner. You will find the video in the playlist below!

The second one showcases the OS of DEMONICA (DEMOuntable Next Integrated Capability Armor), the tool that the main characters use to summon, communicate, and transport demons. It’s equipped with a basic AI, that supports the various team members. You will find the video in the playlist below!

Over the past few days, Atlus shared a couple of videos for the game. The first one is the second comparison video: this time around, we get a look at graphics during battles. The demons are still 2D sprites (that remain unchanged), but the backgrounds are now in 3D, and they added special effects for attacks. They also added an option to speed up battles.

The second video introduces Katou (voiced by Masato Kokubun), in charge of operational command of the Schwarzwelt Investigation Team alongside Commander Gore. He’s also in charge of navigation and operation of the Red Sprite. He’s the first one who found out about the existence of the demon summoning program.

You will find both videos in the playlist below.

Here’s the latest demon artworks shared by Atlus over the past two days:

July 12th

Today, Atlus uploaded a new video for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. It compares the graphics of the original game (on Nintendo DS, and of the remake (on Nintendo 3DS), for a dungeon. The graphics of the remake show a clear improvement over the original, and yet, they manage to remain quite faithful. Believe it or not: the polygon models are the same, and were not remade!

The video can be found in the playlist below!
