SEGA 3D Classics: more games could come out if sales are good

Last month, SEGA made a rather surprising announcement: the second wave of SEGA 3D Classics would get three additional titles. It’s not the start of a third wave, but rather three additional SEGA 3D Classics, some sort of extension for the second wave.

Does that mean that M2 and SEGA have no plans for a third wave of SEGA 3D Classics? Well… not now, at least! Of course, it will all depend on sales: if the physical compilation (only in Japan) and the latest SEGA 3D Classics sell well, more titles could get a 3D Remaster. Nothing is quite set in stone just yet, but since that’s what was said after the first wave of SEGA 3D Classics came out, there’s certainly room for some hope!

This was all announced in a recent interview published by Famitsu, who got to ask some questions to Yosuke Okunari (SEGA) and Naoki Horii (M2). One of the topics includes 3D Streets of Rage II, which came out last week in Japan: Horii explains (among other things) that the Quartet mode was added to the game from a desire to play as a wider range of characters in a single playthrough.

Another topic covered in this interview: games considered for a 3D Remaster, but which were ultimately rejected. Yosuke Okunari explains that at the very start of the project, M2 had around ten different games in testing. At that time, they realised that some games were perfectly suited to 3D visuals, while others really weren’t.

For some of them, the amount of work required was simply too much (like adding additional 3D information every time the screen space changes). Unfortunately, Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole is one of the games where the 3D conversion was too complicated, and would require a much bigger development team and budget. For games like Columns, 3D didn’t add anything to the game, so they were rejected.
