Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo Today! reveals several minor features and options (System Lock, GL/GR buttons, battery charging, more)
When Shigeru Miyamoto himself introduced Nintendo Today! during the Nintendo Direct in March, he explained that Nintendo would share various bits of Nintendo Switch 2 news via the app following its full reveal in early April. And it’s indeed via Nintendo Today! that Nintendo chose to reveal several (minor) features and options of the Nintendo Switch 2.
And over the past few weeks, several such features and options were revealed:
- Sounds of the Nintendo Switch 2 System: when you press the C button or select an icon of the Home Menu, a short sound is played (each button/icon gets a different one). Also, when you have the console in its dock, a sound will play when you wake it up from sleep mode.
- News feed: on Nintendo Switch, the News feed features articles for all Users / Nintendo Accounts registered on the console. But on Nintendo Switch 2, clicking on the News icon brings up the User selection screen, which means that each User gets its own feed!
- Search for Controllers: a handy feature that allows you to locate your Joy-Con 2 controllers by making it vibrate and make a sound. Do note that for the feature to work, you first need to pair the Joy-Con 2 with the console. Also, it won’t work if the controller is out of batteries, or simply out of range. Speaking of controllers: in the ‘Change Grip/Order’ section of the Controllers settings on the Home Menu, sounds will play when you press the L/R, ZL/ZR or SL/SR buttons. Those sounds work with Joy-Cons 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and even Joy-Cons and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller!
- How to use the GL and GR buttons: those buttons are found on the Joy-Con 2 charging grip and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. You can map those to your buttons of choice. To do so, simply press and hold the Home button while playing to access the Quck Settings panel. Also, the console will remember the button assigments for each game and user!
- Battery charging settings: Nintendo added a feature called Stop Charging Around 90%. It slows down the charging of the console when the battery reaches around 90%. While this feature does shorten the amount of time you can play with a single charge, it ultimately helps reduce the loss of battery capacity over time.
- System Lock: Nintendo added an option to lock the console with a PIN. If you use it, you need to enter your PIN every time you turn the console on or wake it up from sleep.
- Mouse Controlers on the Home Menu: yes, you can use the Joy-Cons 2’s mouse controls even on the Home Menu. There’s even a little tutorial on the Controllers setting page! And switching back to standard controls is as easy and straightforward as picking up the Joy-Cons 2.
You can find video clips of those features in action in the Nintendo Today! app.
Nintendo Switch 2 comes out on June 5th worldwide.
