With less than a week left until release, Capcom has launched a new video series for Monster Hunter Stories. In this one, Capcom showcases the various elements of the game, complete with commentary from Lilia (the protagonist’s childhood friend). In the second episode, it’s battles we get a look at.

Just like in most RPGs, when you encounter a monster in the field and they touch you (or you touch them), the battle begins. In Monster Hunter Stories, battles are turn-based, and there are three main action commands: Power, Speed, Technique. Each one has its own strength and weaknesses, with a “weapon triangle”-like system:

Technique > Speed > Power > Technique > etc.

In battle, your character can use various weapons, with four types available (each with their own sets of skills):

  • Great Sword
  • Sword & Shield
  • Hammer
  • Hunting Horn

Of course, you can also wear some armour, in order to power up your character, and deal even more damage. Finally, there’s the usual items you can use to get an edge during battle. For example, you can heal yourself or your monster, place traps to deal damage to your opponents, and more.

Here’s the second episode of The World of Monster Hunter Stories, which is all about battles:

But that’s not all: Capcom also revealed what the Monster Hunter Stories amiibo will do in the game. Basically, each amiibo allows you to get a special monster:

  • Protagonist (male) + Rathalos = special Rathalos with lots of open slots and some extra speed;
  • Protagonist (female) + Rathalos = special Rathalos with lots of open slots and some extra tenacity;
  • Nabiru = special Aptonoth with 8 open slots and some extra skills.

Here’s some pictures:

Naturally, the amiibo from the second wave (releasing on December 8th) will also unlock a special monster, though we don’t have more details at the moment:
