Story and characters

As mentioned previously, the game starts with Luigi opening a mysterious book found in the Library of Peach’s castle. Unfortunately, the various characters from the Paper Mario universe start pouring out of it, which causes a lot of trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom… as if one Bowser wasn’t enough, here comes a second one!

Here’s a video showing a story cutscene, most likely the intro video:

Paper Mario joins forces with Mario & Luigi, and fights by their side. During exploration, you use a button for each character:

  • Mario: A
  • Luigi: B
  • Paper Mario: Y

In order to progress through the story, but also find lots of secrets, you have to use the abilities of each character accordingly. For example, Paper Mario can slip through tiny cracks, roll himself up, and more.

Next, Nintendo introduces the various characters:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Paper Mario
  • Starlow
  • Toad and Paper Toad
  • Peach and Paper Peach
  • Toadette
  • Kamek and Paper Kamek
  • Bowser and Paper Bowser
  • Goomba and Paper Goomba
  • Lakitu
  • Bowser Jr. and Paper Bowser Jr.

Battle system

Actions

In the field, when exploring, you can use various actions: hammer, jump, and dash. And since Paper Mario is with you, you can perform some special actions such as:

  • Trio Catch: Luigi and Mario use Paper Mario and stretch him in order to reach items
  • Trio Hammer: all three characters use their hammer together

Battle

In battle, you can get an extra attack if you attack enemies before the battle starts (when in the field). You have three basic actions:

  • Jumping
  • Using your Hammer
  • Pressing A with the right timing when an enemy attacks, to lower the amount of damage received

If your timing is right, you can deal more damage with your attacks.

With Paper Mario, you can also use Trio Actions:

  • you can use a giant Hammer
  • you can play Trio Squash
  • you can use the Trio Kite

Here’s videos for the last two Trio Actions:

Of course, the Bros. Attacks are also back, with a:

  • a spinning attack
  • a rather dangerous-looking rocket!

Features for beginners

If you’re not too familiar with the Mario & Luigi series, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. will have:

  • an Assist Mode, which helps you see who is targeted by enemies (so you know when to press the right button to defend yourself)
  • an option to display/hide furigana (only in the Japanese version, obviously)
  • an Easy Mode, which makes your characters stronger.

Also, Toad recommends you avoid running away from battle too much, otherwise your characters won’t level up and you will have trouble beating some enemies (such as bosses). He also recommends you upgrade your equipment frequently, in order to always be prepared.

Giant papercraft

During the game, you will have to go through special boss battles against giant enemies. To defeat them, you will have to operate a giant papercraft, which is carried by a bunch of Toads. Those battles are all about rhythm, and you have two main attacks: a Dash, and a Throw.

Here’s a video for those giant papercraft battles:

Toad rescue

During your adventure, you will have to rescue many Paper Toads scattered all around the Mushroom Kingdom. In the game, you will find a special building ran by two Lakitu: if you go there, you will be able to get details about the location of the Toads you have to save. To save them, you need to beat various mini-games (that you can see on the screencaps below).

Here’s a video showcasing one of the mini-games, where you have to round up a bunch of Paper Toads:

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS) comes out on December 3rd in Japan, December 4th in Europe, and next year in North America.
