[Japan] Wii Sports Club: (national) online leaderboards to be discontinued on January 31st

First launched on October 30th (Japan) and November 7th (Europe and North America) with Tennis and Bowling, Wii Sports Club was released at retail in July 2014. This updated version of the Wii classic introduced various new features, including Miiverse integration, online play, and more.

Unfortunately, one of those features will be discontinued on January 31st in Japan: online leaderboards. Those leaderboards can be found in the My Page section, and will not be updated after January 31st. Nintendo specifies it’s the national leaderboards that will be discontinued.

Here’s a screenshot of the online leaderboards (in case you don’t remember what they looked like… though that probably means you don’t really care about their discontinuation!):

wii-sports-clubNintendo specifies that other online features will not be affected by this, and will therefore keep on working even after January 31st. Of course, that includes online play, which means you will still be able to play with your friends via the internet. If any other services are to be discontinued, we can imagine that Nintendo will have a separate announcement.

Also, one last note: right now, this announcement is only for Japan, since as of writing, there’s no such notice for Europe or North America. Naturally, we will update this post whenever Nintendo posts one for those regions.

Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn’t explain why this particular online service is to be discontinued.
