Top 5 for Software – Famitsu

July 2016 was a pretty slow month for the video game market in Japan. After all, only two games sold more than 100 000 units, according to Famitsu data, and even those underperformed. The first one is Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura with 818 964 units sold from July 16th to July 31st. Those are by no means catastrophic sales, but they’re still pretty disappointing for a brand new entry in the Yo-kai Watch series.

As for Puzzle & Dragons X, it sold 100 943 units during the first three days. As mentioned in our previous reports, that’s a massive drop compared to both Puzzle & Dragons Z and Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition.

Publishers – Famitsu

Unsurprisingly, Level-5 is the publisher who sold the most games in July 2016, thanks to Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura. Nintendo is #2 with 367 000 units, despite not having a single game in the Top 10. Again, this is made possible thanks to the steady sales of the company’s many evergreen titles.

Hardware – Famitsu

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS is back at #1 with over 110 000 units sold: that’s about 37 000 units more than June 2016, and 2 000 units more than July 2015. Sales were impact by the release of Yo-kai Watch 3, and remain pretty good for a 5 year old handheld.

As for the Wii U, sales are up compared to June 2016 (39 819 units vs 16 584 units), thanks to the new Splatoon Premium Pack. However, they’re down from July 2015 (49 012 units), which isn’t really surprising with the empty line-up (there’s only so much the new Premium Pack could do on its own!).

Platform best-sellers – Media Create

To the surprise of no one, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura is the best-seller on Nintendo 3DS for July 2016. On Wii U, Splatoon dominated sales, but Minecraft: Wii U Edition wasn’t very far behind… Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics either!
