[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 40, 2020 (September 28 – October 04) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 40, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 40)

Week 40 was a pretty uneventful week for the Japanese market, especially on Nintendo Switch (not even a single entry in the Top 10 Software). Unsurprisingly, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is back at the top with 36 495 units, thanks a significant increase in sales (+22%) due to the release of the Fall update. And now that Nintendo have resumed shipments of the Nintendo Switch bundle, we can expect sales to grow steadily in the next few weeks.

It’s now sold over 5 790 577 units since launch (not counting digital sales, not tracked by Famitsu), and how quickly it reaches 6 million units sold LTD will entirely depend on how big the shipments for the Nintendo Switch bundle are going to be.

Highlights this week include:

  • 02./01. [NSW] Super Mario 3D All-Stars <Super Mario 64 \ Super Mario Sunshine \ Super Mario Galaxy> <ACT> (Nintendo) {2020.09.18} (¥6.480) – 34.282 / 308.221 (-46%). It’s now sold over 300 000 units at retail alone, and the holiday season hasn’t even started yet!

Overall, this wasn’t a really noteworthy week for the Nintendo Switch — even the usual evergreen titles didn’t sell significantly better or worse than usual. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics did see a rather unusual and unexplained drop in sales, though.

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw a healthy bump in sales with 91 093 units sold, despite a complete lack of notable releases (due to the end of Q3 2020 on September 31st). In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold “only” 70 542 units during Week 39. The increase is exclusively due to bigger shipments for the OG model; demand for the Lite model seems to have stabilised as a few retailers have stopped lotteries for that model.

As mentioned above, Nintendo have started shipping Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundles, so Nintendo Switch sales should remain strong in the next few weeks. This year, there’s no big holiday release to boost sales, so any increase would have to come from the usual evergreen titles (and more specifically Animal Crossing).

Year on Year, sales are more or less flat: 91 093 units (2020) vs 89 137 units (2019). After a few weeks of drop due to the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite in September 2019, 2020 is back to Year on Year increases.

This week, the Nintendo Switch reached its latest milestone: 4 million units in 2020 alone (4 045 178 units to be precise)… and it’s still early October! In comparison, the Nintendo Switch had sold “only” 2 607 761 units last year as of Week 40. And depending on how big shipments will be during the next few weeks, the console could very well top 2019 sales by the end of the month (early November is more likely at this point).

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS is still selling better than usual, with 1 568 units sold this week (vs. 3 828 units last week). Sales are still up Year on Year due to the discontinuation of the remaining models, but just barely (1 303 units in Week 40 2019). YTD sales now stand at 54 424 units (vs. 166 903 units in 2019), and LTD sales at 24 550 571 units.
