[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 28, 2020 (July 06 – July 12) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 28, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 28)

Week 28 was a fairly busy week for the video games market in Japan, thanks to a couple of major releases and a another big increase in Nintendo Switch shipments. The biggest release of the week is eBaseball Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2020, which sold over 186 000 units during its launch week. In comparison, the previous mainline entry sold about 191 000 units at launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita (133 555 units and 58 211 units sold respectively).

This is a pretty solid performance for the series, especially as digital sales are expected to be quite strong (if the Nintendo eShop weekly charts are any indication). The previous entry ended up selling over 374 000 units LTD, and this 2020 entry should be able to sell as much, if not more.

Based solely on launch week, it’s pretty safe to say that Konami’s multiplatform strategy for the game paid off, especially as the Nintendo Switch version was not treated as an afterthought. This version did particularly well: not only did it end up outselling the PlayStation 4 version (94 876 units vs. 91 547 units), but it also saw a noticeable increase compared to last year’s game (75 505 units at launch, but it wasn’t a mainline entry, though).

Based on the usual sales trajectory of Nintendo Switch games, it’s fairly safe to expect eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 on Nintendo Switch to keep outselling its PS4 counterpart. The previous entry on the platform ended up selling over 200 000 units (225 614 units to be precise), and as a proper, mainline entry, eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 should be able to outsell it (especially if you factor in digital sales).

Highlights this week includes:

  • 05./03. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) – 44.261 / 1.137.060 (+130%). Another massive increase in sales, thanks to bigger shipments. And no, shortages are still not over. One would be hard pressed not to wonder when this game is ever going to NOT be suffering from shortages!
  • 06./02. [NSW] Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Nintendo) – 20.094 / 215.305 (-15%). It has now sold over 200 000 units since launch at retail alone, and sales remain strong. With the Summer holiday seasons just around the corner, they are expected to stay that way for the time being.

The usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch performed pretty well this week: sales are either slightly up (Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), or slightly down (all the others).

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw a big increase in sales (nearly x2), thanks to bigger shipments to retailers. But despite those, it was still impossible to buy one without first entering one of the infamous lotteries.

The console sold 96 879 units this week, as opposed to 52 250 units during Week 27 and 55 823 units last year during the same week. Last week’s drop Year on Year didn’t last very long, and the gap between 2019 and 2020 is back to widening once again. It’s now over 1.2 million units.

It’s pretty impressive that by the end of the month, the Nintendo Switch will have sold over 3 million units in 2020 alone (or will be pretty close to that milestone). It looks like 2020 sales will end up topping total 2019 sales way before the start of the holiday season, which is not something that happens frequently, especially for a console in its 4th year on the market.

LTD sales now stand at 14 199 442 units, with 2 391 091 units for the Lite model, and 11 808 351 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are down to 801 units this week (vs. 933 units during Week 27, and 2 361 units during Week 27 2019), bringing YTD sales to 35 074 units (vs. 135 266 units by Week 27 2019), and LTD sales to 24 531 221 units.
