[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 24, 2020 (June 08 – June 14) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 24, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 24)

Week 24 was a pretty uneventful week for the video games market in Japan, without a single new game in the Top 10 Software. But there were some new releases during that week, namely The Wonderful 101: Remastered. Since neither the Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 versions charted, that means they both sold less than 4 855 units. In comparison, the Wii U version sold about 6 663 units at launch (and 27 028 units LTD), and it’s possible both versions of the Remaster combined didn’t match those sales.

Meanwhile, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics had a great second week, with 47 181 units sold (-21%). Demand remains strong for the game, and it should keep at a steady pace for many weeks and months. In fact, demand seems to be a tad stronger than expected, as the game has become hard to find in some stores. Fortunately, the situation is nowhere near as bad as for Ring Fit Adventure, especially as the game does not ship with a complex accessory (the Ring-Con is the reason shortages have been so bad).

Since launch, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics has already sold over 100 000 units (111 624 units to be precise). While it’s too early to say for sure, the game does have the potential to become the latest million-seller on Nintendo Switch (though it’s obviously going to take several months!). So far, it’s outselling the Nintendo DS game, and that’s not even counting digital sales!

Other highlights this week:

  • Ring Fit Adventure has now sold over 1 million units (1 006 069 units to be precise). Demand remains ridiculously high 8 months after release, and shortages are not going away any time soon;
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield is the only game in the Top 10 to saw its sales increase this week, with +6%. This is, of course, due to anticipation for the Isle of Armor DLC (released on June 17th)
  • All the games in the Top 10 are Nintendo Switch titles!

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales dropped again this week, but the drop remains somewhat limited. The platform has certainly seen much worse in the past, despite shortages currently making it impossible to find the console on store shelves. The console sold 55 187 units, down from 68 192 units the previous week, but still up by a significant margin from 2019 (34 321 units were sold during Week 24 2019).

The gap between 2020 and 2019 sales just keeps on widening, with 2 494 655 units sold as of Week 24 2020, vs. 1 395 638 units as of Week 24 2019. It will be interesting to see just how wide the gap will get: the second half of 2019 saw really great sales for the Nintendo Switch (not to mention the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite), but it looks like the second half of 2020 is also going to be quite strong. But first, we will have to wait and see when Nintendo finally get the stock situation under control…

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold 13 878 086 units in Japan, with 2 302 362 units for the Lite model, and 11 575 724 units for the OG model. It should hit the 14 million units milestone before the end of the month, provided sales do not keep on dropping.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it’s still hanging in 4 digital sales territory, with 1 004 units sold this week (vs. 1 180 units the previous week, and 2 768 units last year during the same week). It has now sold 31 244 units this year (vs. 125 270 units last year as of Week 24), and 24 527 391 units LTD.
