Japan: more sales data for Week 7 2018, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 7)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 7, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 494 000 units, which is 75.29% of Week 6 sales. This time around, both sales of new releases and previously releases games are down (54.11% and 86.69% of their respective Week 6 sales).

For Media Create, the market has simply gone back to its “pre-Monster Hunter World” state, which is also the case Hardware-wise. Sales dropped to 104 000 units (-20%), which is on par with the second week of January.

Media Create (Day 1 sell-through)

This week, we have Day 1 sell-through data for one, lone Nintendo Switch game:

  • [NSW] Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition (Ubisoft) – 10%. A pretty poor debut, but that’s on par for the course for the Rayman series in Japan.

Dengeki (Week 7)

Dengeki’s data for Bayonetta is pretty interesting. The combined sales of Bayonetta 2 and the Non-Stop Climax Edition are pretty much the same (about 21 000 units), but Dengeki report that the former sold more than the latter (while Media Create reported the opposite). But as you can see for yourself, the difference between the two is not that significant:

  • Bayonetta 2: 11 336 units (9 532 units for Media Create)
  • Non-Stop Clima Edition: 9 207 units (11 694 units for Media Create)

Dengeki also reports that Splatoon 2 sold about 22 000 units, bringing the total since launch to over 2.1 million units.

We also have some data for the current Fiscal Year, and it’s hardly surprise that both Hardware and Software were centered around Nintendo platforms (and more specifically the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS). Looking at Hardware sales alone, Nintendo platforms account for the following:

  • Nintendo Switch: 47.9% of total Harware sales
  • Nintendo 3DS: 20.7% of total Hardware sales
  • Combined: 68.6% of Total Hardware sales

Software-wise, the domination isn’t quite as strong, but Nintendo platforms still account for well over half of total sales:

  • Nintendo Switch: 27.4% of total Software sales
  • Nintendo 3DS: 32.3% of total Software sales
  • Combined: 59.7% of total Software sales

Dengeki points out that since the second half of January, and the release of Monster Hunter World, the PlayStation 4 has been dominating sales
