Japan: more sales data for Week 38 2018, August 2018, Steins;Gate Elite, more (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 38)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 308 000 units during Week 38, which is 84.13% of Week 37 sales. This week, there was a ton of new releases (18 in total!), but since they all sold relatively low amounts (none of them even managed to sell at least 20 000 units), Marvel’s Spiderman remained the best-selling game without too much effort. Overall, this was a rather calm week, with sales dominated by previously released titles.

Hardware wise, sales are also down with 64 000 units sold: that’s 97.57% of Week 37 sales. Both Software and Hardware sales are down, and there’s nothing even public holidays can do to brighten such a slow week.

Media Create also share data about Steins;Gate Elite, which sold 30 000 units across the 3 platforms it was released on. Here’s the platform breakdown:

  • Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4: 13 000 units each
  • PlayStation Vita: 4 000 units

Naturally, they point out that it’s much lower than the previous release in the series, Steins;Gate Zero, which sold a combined 86 000 units across all 3 platforms. Of course, this was a brand new entry, so a direct comparison isn’t exactly fair for Steins;Gate Elite which is some sort of “remake” of the original game.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 39)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for several Nintendo Switch titles:

  • [NSW] Warriors Orochi 4 (Koei Tecmo) (¥7.800) – 50%. Ok debut, but sales and sell-through are lower than PlayStation 4 version (70%);
  • [NSW] The World Ends with You -Final Remix- (Square Enix) – 30%. A bit on the low end, but nothing too worrying: Week 1 sell-through should end around 50-60%;
  • [NSW] Dragon Ball FighterZ (Bandai Namco Games)  – 20%. It looks like both Bandai-Namco and retailer learned their lessons after the Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 shortages, and shipped/ordered enough copies this time around. Sales should improve during the week-end;
  • [NSW] Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Sega) – 30%. Ok debut for a late port, but since sales should be concentrated on the first few days, this is definitely on the low side;
  • [NSW] Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk (Nippon Ichi Software) – 20%. Low debut, unsurprising for a late port.

Dengeki (Week 38)

Dengeki report slightly higher sales for Steins;Gate Elite, with 32 000 units sold. Nintendo Switch sales are the same though:

  • Nintendo Switch: 13 000 units sold
  • PlayStation 4: 15 000 units sold
  • PlayStation Vita: 4 000 units sold

The sell-through ratio for this game was about 55% on average (unfortunately, they do not provide the ratio for each version separately), which is fairly good. Since sales for this kind of games are generally concentrated on the first couple of weeks, it’s clear there is not going to be a second shipment any time soon (if at all).

For Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country, Dengeki report that it sold about 5 000 units (pretty close to what Media Create reported on Wednesday). We also have Minecraft on Nintendo Switch with 15 000 units sold (314 000 units since launch), and Splatoon 2 with 11 000 units sold (2 657 000 units sold).

Dengeki then talk about the Tokyo Game Show 2018, which was held last week, and the many games that were announced/showcased there. Nintendo did not attend, but instead broadcast a Nintendo Direct on September 14th, where several key titles were announced/showcased: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros…. there’s some pretty big titles on the horizon for the console!

And the Japanese market is certainly going to need those games to recover. So far this year, Hardware sales are down to 1.86 million units (-32.6% Year on Year), and Software sales are down to 9 080 000 units (-29.3% Year on Year). The current situation remains rather sticky for the market as a whole, which is why Dengeki expect that the major titles scheduled for release in the second half of the current Fiscal Year will greatly boost sales.

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:

Platforms This week This week (%) Fiscal Year Fiscal Year
PS4 128,198 43.1% 3,265,072 36.0%
Vita 19,801 6.7% 570,247 6.3%

ETC 1,408 0.5% 48,850 0.5%
Total 297,487 100.0% 9,080,751 100.0%

And here’s Hardware sales:

Platforms This week This week (%) Fiscal Year Fiscal Year (%)
PS4 18,656 28.1% 492,565 26.5%
Vita 2,515 3.8% 66,345 3.6%
