Japan: more sales data for Week 51 2018, November 2018, Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 51)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 703 000 units during Week 51, which is 124.82% of Week 50 sales.

This year, total Software sales during the Christmas season reached 3 067 000 units, which is 103.37% of sales during the same period last year (December 11th to December 17th and December 18th to December 24th, so two weeks in total).

Sales of Nintendo Switch games doubled compared to last year, to 2 132 000 units: that’s about 70% of total Software sales. It’s no wonder Media Create considers Nintendo’s console was at the heart of Christmas sales this year.

But despite that dramatic increase, total Software sales are only slightly up this year due to the massive drop in sales for the Nintendo 3DS (only 16.22% of 2017 sales) and the PlayStation Vita (only 15% of 2017 sales).

The main new release for Week 51 is Dragon Quest Builders 2, which sold about 208 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. It’s quite below the debut sales of Dragon Quest Builders (January 2016), with 373 000 units acorss the 3 platforms it was released on. The lack of a PlayStation Vita version (178 000 units at launch for Dragon Quest Builders) was certainly noticeable, but with how sales have dropped for that platform, even that additional version would not have prevented a significant drop in sales.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 52)

No data this week, unfortunately.

Dengeki (Week 51)

Dengeki report that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold 433 000 additional units, and was the best-selling game in Japan for the 3rd week in a row. It’s now sold over 2 million units (2 097 000 units to be precise), and it did so in less than 3 weeks.

In comparison, the only multi-million seller on Nintendo Switch, Splatoon 2 (2.8 million units LTD), reached 2 million units after about half a year (27 weeks). It will certainly be interesting to see how much further Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sales will go, and whether Splatoon 2 will manage to stay ahead or not.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 sold about 200 000 units, and more precisely:

  • Nintendo Switch version: 101 000 units
  • PlayStation 4 version: 108 000 units

According to Dengeki, the sell-through ratio is about 50%, which is quite low (especially as Media Create reported 30% sell-through for Day 1, which means lowish sales during the weekend). Fortunately for Square-Enix, there’s still two weeks left before the end of the holiday season (including the one with New Year), so Dragon Quest Builders 2 should avoid massive discounts from retailers trying to get rid of unsold copies.

As mentioned on Wednesday, Dragon Quest Builders 2 debuted quite lower than its predecessor, which sold about 368 000 units at launch (and 638 000 units LTD). Both the sales and the sell-through ratio are pretty average, but hopefully for Square-Enix, New Year sales will help boost sales.

Other games mentioned this week by Dengeki include:

  • Onimusha: Warlords – 31 000 units sold across the two platforms it was released on, including about 10 000 units for the Nintendo Switch version);
  • Katamari Damacy Reroll – 11 000 units sold;
  • Super Mario Party – 133 000 units sold this week, 680 000 units sold LTD;
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! – 140 000 units sold this week, 1 166 000 units LTD;

As you can see for yourself, previously released games saw a major increase in sales.

Week 51 was the week just before Christmas, and Hardware sales increased by 0.6% to 421 000 units (best weekly sales this Fiscal Year). As for Software sales, they increased by 25.3%, to 1 592 000 units. Both Hardware and Software performed well.
