Japan: more sales data for Week 48 2019, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays, November 2019 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 48)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one new Nintendo Switch title (platforms listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] [PS4] Yo-kai Watch 4++ <RPG> (Level 5) (¥6.480) – 20%. A poor debut, with the Nintendo Switch version selling the most despite the extra content being available as DLC for the base game.

Dengeki (Week 48)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Sword and Shield sold about 296 000 units during its third week, with the versions breakdown as follows:

  • Pokémon Sword: 140 069 units this week (839 189 units LTD)
  • Pokémon Shield: 105 047 units this week (573 289 units LTD)
  • Dual Pack: 25 317 units this week (323 876 units LTD)

This week, Pokémon Sword and Shield has become a multi-million seller with 2 060 000 units sold all versions combined (1 160 000 units for Pokémon Sword, and 900 000 units for Pokémon Shield, including the dual packs). This milestone was reached during its third week on the market.

Pokémon Sword and Shield is now the 4th best-selling game on Nintendo Switch:

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 3.42 million units
  2. Splatoon 2: 3.12 million units
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 2.38 million units

It will certainly be interesting to see how this new Pokémon game ends up selling in the long run. Right now, there’s little doubt it will sell well over 3 million units at retail alone, and probably even 4 million units.

Meanwhile, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays sold about 116 000 units at launch, with the Nintendo Switch version account for 46 000 units. The sell-through ratio for both versions is pretty good: about 80%.

Here’s how the other entried fared this week:

  • Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Infinite Combate (mages.): 10 155 units sold on 3 platforms, with 3 480 units on Nintendo Switch alone. A fairly solid performance for a niche game;
  • Tetsudou Nippon! Rosen Tabi Eizan Densha-hen (Sonic Powered): 1 006 units. An unsurprising performance for this kind of game with limited appeal.

This week, we get some data for November 2019 (and more precisely October 28th to November 1st):

  • Hardware: 840 000 units (+30.2%) / 22 billion Yen (+12.5%)
  • Software: 4 350 000 units (+78.3%) / 30.3 billion Yen (+97.3%)
  • Total: 52.3 billion Yen (+49.8%)

Dengeki point out that it’s the first time in two months that the market is up, and hopefully, that momentum will carry over to December.

Here’s the Top 3 Software for November 2019:

  1. [NSW] Pokémon Sword and Shield (The Pokémon Company): 2.06 million units
  2. [NSW] Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Nintendo): 304 000 units
