Japan: more sales data for Week 35, Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, Aug. 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 35 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 35, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 499 000 units, which is 115.09% of Week 34 sales. This time around, sales of both new releases and previously-released titles increased, with the former going from 139 000 to 182 000 units sold, and the latter from 295 000 to 317 000 units sold.

Unfortunately, Hardware didn’t see a similiar increase, with 107 000 units sold (86.37% of Week 34 sales).

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have Day 1 sell-through data for only one game:

  • [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥6.800) – 40% (better than expected for a port). What’s really interesting is that Bandai-Namco has already reported that the game is sold out nationwide, which would imply really strong sales during the second day (even better than Day 1, which would be unusual). Of course, we don’t know how many units the publisher shipped to retailers, so we will have to wait until we get the first concrete bit of sales data before we can clarify this.

Week 35 (Dengeki)

Dengeki reports that Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 sold only 31 000 units during the first four days, with a sell-through ratio of 45% (which is pretty poor, especially for a highly frontloaded game like a Dungeon RPG). In comparison, Etrian Mystery Dungeon sold 65 000 units at launch, and was sold out with a 95% sell-through ratio. As you can see, Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2’s debut is quite poor.

Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. sold 29 000 units this week (121 000 units since launch), and Splatoon 2 sold 43 000 units this week (1 089 000 units since launch). As for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, sales finally topped 3 million units, with 40 000 units for the two versions combined this week.

For the first 5 months of the Fiscal Year (April 3rd to August 27th), total sales for the video game market as a whole topped 55.3 billion Yen: that’s -8% Year on Year over the same period. Sales were already down as of June, but it looks like the Summer holiday period didn’t boost sales enough to avoid a drop.

But the thing is, July and August did see a significant increase in sales thanks to Splatoon 2 and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age:

  • July: 45.4 billion Yen (+146.5%) increase
  • August: 31.9 billion Yen (+86.9%) increase

By the end of August specifically…

  • Hardware: 2.39 million units (+75.4%) / 63.7 billion Yen (+80.8%)
  • Software: 11.77 million units (+7.4%) / 68.8 billion Yen (+13.8%)
  • Total: 132.5 billion Yen (+38.5%)

Dengeki expects this increase in sales and the momentum from the Summer holiday period to carry on in September.

August 2017 (July 31st to August 27th, Famitsu)

Unsurprisingly, the two versions of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age were the best-selling games in August in Japan, with over 820 000 units sold combined (and over 500 000 units just for the Nintendo 3DS version).Splatoon 2 also kept selling despite the Nintendo Switch shortages, with 269 414 units in August alone. We expect sales to remain steady throughout the rest of the year (especially as the stock situation improves).

The Snack World: Trejarers had a decent opening month with 138 545 units, but since those sales are for three weeks, it’s nothing to write home about, sadly…  Finally, with just two days tracked, Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. was the #5 best-selling game with 94 973 units sold.

01./01. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} (¥5.980) – 500.963 / 1.631.431 (-56%)
02./02. [PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} (¥8.980) – 320.857 / 1.271.195 (-66%)
03./03. [NSW] Splatoon 2 # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} (¥5.980) – 269.414 / 1.069.808 (-66%)
04./00. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers <RPG> (Level 5) {2017.08.10} (¥4.800) – 138.545 / NEW
05./00. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. # <ACT> (Capcom) {2017.08.25} (¥5.800) – 94.973 / NEW

Nintendo platforms grabbed 4 of the 5 spots in the Top 20, with the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS both getting 2.

3DS – 2
NSW – 2
PS4 – 1

Nintendo wasn’t the most successful publisher in August, though it definitely would have if not for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age!

Square Enix – 919.000
Nintendo – 495.000
Capcom – 246.000

Finally, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in August, with sales dropping by only 50 000 units compared to July. It looks like Nintendo did manage to increase production, though as mentioned several times before, it’s clearly nowhere near enough to meet demand. The Nintendo 3DS was the second best-selling piece of Hardware, though once again, the PlayStation 4 wasn’t that far behind.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Media Create)

This week, sales of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild finally surpassed those of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii. And if you also add sales of the Wii U version, then it’s also outsold both versions of Twilight Princess. That’s a pretty impressive result, because The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has only been out for 6 months, while Twilight Princess total sales “accumulated” over a period of several years.

[WII] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess <ADV> (Nintendo) {2006.12.02} (¥6.476) – 572.607
[GCN] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess _Nintendo Store_ <ADV> (Nintendo) {2006.12.02} (¥6.476) – 70.000
Total: 642.607

VS

[NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 576.067
[WIU] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 133.024 (missing many weeks of sales)
Total: 709.091

In fact, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is well on its way to become one of the best-selling 3D Zelda games of all times in Japan. If it keeps selling on the long-run, like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess did, it could very well outsell The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the most popular 3D Zelda game in the country.

[N64] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time <ADV> (Nintendo) {1998.11.21} (¥6.800) – 1.257.205
