Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 35)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games (games and platforms listed from best selling to worst selling):

  • [NSW] [PS4] Dead or School (Studio Nanafushi) – 40%. Decent debut, but shipment should be rather low;
  • [NSW] Astral Chain (Nintendo) – “Fairly favorable start”

Dengeki (Week 34)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Maker 2 sold about 22 000 additional units this week, and ranked first yet another week. It has now sold over 500 000 units, and in fact, it’s the very first game to do so this Fiscal Year.

Oninaki was the biggest release this week, with about 28 000 units sold (including 13 000 units on Nintendo Switch). The sell-through is rather average (literally): about 55-60%. This third game from Tokyo RPG Factory certainly fared much better than Lost Sphear (12 000 units at launch, and 39 000 units LTD), but it’s nowhere near I Am Setsuna (59 000 units at launch, and 110 000 units LTD).

Other than that, there was not much activity in the top of the charts. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold about 10 000 units, bringing total sales to 3 329 000 units, and Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version sold about 9 000 units (137 000 units LTD). Unfortunately, only 3 games managed to sell more than 10 000 units this week.

Here’s how the other entries sold this week:

  • [NSW] Mary Skelter 2 (Compile Heart): 1 806 units. Unsurprisingly low debut for yet another late port;
  • [NSW] Katakoi Contrast: Collection of Branch (Idea Factory): 1 467 units. Again, low sales but sadly not a surprise.

Week 34 was the week right after Obon, and so a drop in sales was to be expected. And unfortunately, it wasn’t all that pretty:

  • Hardware: 43 000 units (-46.3%)
  • Software: 228 000 units (-38.8%)

With one week left in August, Dengeki shared some data for that month this week. Unfortunately, sales went back down after a slight increase in July:

  • Hardware: 237 000 units (-34.3%) / 7.3 billion Yen (-30.6%)
  • Software: 1 194 000 units (-29.7%) / 7.1 billion Yen (-27.1%)
  • Total: 14.4 billion Yen (-28.9%)

In July, sales increased Year on Year for the first time in 4 months, but the momentum didn’t carry over to August.

Unfortunately, things are not looking much better for the Summer season as a whole (as of August 25th):

  • Hardware: 15.7 billion Yen (-20.3%)
  • Software: 17.4 billion Yen (–2.2%)
  • Total: 33.2 billion Yen (-11.7%)

It’s highly unlikely the last week of the month will change anything, and the only question is how low sales will end up when August is over.
