[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 30, 2018 (July 23rd – July 29th) [Top 50]

Media Create

This week, there’s quite a lot of new faces in the Top 20 provided by Media Create, starting with Mega Man Legacy X Collection 1 & 2 on Nintendo Switch. It sold over 20 000 units, with:

16 207 units for Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 & 2
4 246 units for Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 (stand-alone)

This is a pretty good performance, because as comparison, Mega Man Legacy Collection on Nintendo 3DS sold about 22 000 units at launch (NB: Famitsu data), and there’s also sales of the PlayStation 4 version to account for. The Nintendo Switch version was less popular, most likely due to the fact that, even in Japan, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 is only available as a Download Code (which is an issue if you want to resell it, as the used market is pretty big in Japan -even bigger than in Europe and North America-).

Next, we have Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou, which debuted at 7 631 units sold, which is fairly decent for a late port of a Visual Novel which has already been ported to many platforms (the very first non-PC release was on PlayStation 2, after all!). It will be interesting to see how much it sells in the upcoming weeks, but this kind of game tends to have pretty frontloaded sales (so it definitely would not be surprising if it was gone from the Top 20 as early as next week).

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version of Disgaea 1 Complete did not chart in the Top 20 from Media Create, which means it sold less than 4 000 units at launch. We will have to wait for Famitsu data to find out how much it’s sold. Disgaea 5 Complete sold rather poorly in Japan (only 5 000 units at launch), and unfortunately, the same happened for Disgaea 1 Complete. Fortunately, sales in Europe and North America are expected to compensate for the poor Japanese sales!

Finally, we have Dragon Quest X: All-in-One Package, which sold 4 020 units. This is in line with the previous versions of this package on Wii U (4 000 to 3 000 units), but below the Nintendo Switch one (about 13 000 units, helped by the fact that it was the first time the game was released on that platform).

Dragon Quest X is a MMORPG, so retail sales are hardly relevant. It’s especially true of this All-in-One Package, which is just a collection of all the content released up until now (perfect for new players who want to jump in without having to buy or download anything else, but useless for anyone else).

Now, on to previously-released games. Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! had a good second week, with 28 265 units sold according to Media Create. Unfortunately, it missed the 100 000 units milestone by an inch (or rather, less than 2 000 units), but that’s hardly a negative. A 60% drop during the second week is pretty decent, especially as sales are bound to remain strong in the upcoming weeks thanks to the Summer holidays. It should easily sell over 200 000 units by the end of August.

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 is helping Japanese players stay fresh during the intense Summer heat. It sold 20 344 units this week (-7%), which brings the total since launch to 2 490 039 million units. That’s right, it’s going to reach 2.5 million units LTD next week (it already did it for Dengeki)!

Mario Tennis Aces is also enjoying strong sales, with 18 067 units sold: that’s only -8% compared to the previous week. This is another game expected to sell well during the Summer holiday season, and it definitely would not be surprising if it went back above the 20 000 units/week threshold during a week or two. Since launch, over 265 228 units have been sold.

As for Minecraft, its sales seem to have stabilised. This week, 16 067 additional units were sold, which is more or less the same as last week (-1%). It would not be a stretch to expect sales to stay in the 16-20 000 units range through Summer, what with how popular Minecraft is with kids. 154 118 units have already been sold, and in a couple of weeks, sales will top 200 000 units. Depending on how strong sales are in August, it could hit 250 000 units in early September.

More than a year after launch, not only is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still selling, it’s still charting in the Top 20, and with its sales actually rising. It sold 13 887 units during Week 30, which is 3% more than during Week 29. With the Summer holidays now in full swing, sales are unlikely to go down any time soon… 1 654 996 units have been sold since launch, and it’s pretty likely the game will hit 2 million units by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, Octopath Traveler is suffering from shortages, with sales dropping by 41% during its third week on the market… despite demand remaining strong, leading to high prices for used copies.

Right now, it’s not clear when those shortages will end: Square-Enix is sending more copies, but quantities remain limited, and nowhere near enough to meet demand. Since launch, 145 788 units have already been sold, and hopefully, the 200 000 units milestone is reached by the end of August. Let’s just hope Square-Enix will not lose too many sales to used sales…

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has also been suffering from shortages, though not as bad as Octopath Traveler. The Nintendo Switch version sold 8 966 units this week, bringing the total to 71 365 units. There’s little doubt it will end up reaching 100 000 units by the end of the month!

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly down this week, which comes as a bit of a surprise with the Summer holidays in full swing: Media Create report 48 370 units sold for Week 30. Still, they remain in the same range they’ve been in the past few weeks, so it’s not like they dropped off a cliff or anything. We can safely expect sales to go back up during the next couple of weeks, though it’s not clear how high sales will go.

As mentioned previously, there’s no big, super hit this year (unlike last year, which had Splatoon), but the overall line-up is definitely stronger, and more varied, so average sales should be higher. Unfortunately, Week on Week comparison will keep on looking rather grim for 2018 until the end of August!

Last year, during the same week, the Nintendo Switch sold 89 314 units: that was the week just after the launch of Splatoon 2, and Nintendo had kept consoles aside (instead of blowing their entire load on launch week). The good news is that overall Year to Date sales in 2018 should be able to keep up with 2017 sales, especially in September onwards, as shortages made a strong comeback once the Summer holidays were over.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales dropped back to their pre-New Nintendo 2DS XL bundle launch levels, with 8 714 units sold. It doesn’t look like the Summer holidays are having any impact whatsoever… so much for staying above the 10 000 units/week threshold!

The comparison with 2017 sales is absolutely ludicrous: thanks to the release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (and the New Nintendo 2DS XL bundle), sales skyrocketted to 142 600 units during Week 30. There was clearly no way 2018 sales would come anywhere near that level of sales, especially without a major release to back the handheld up (it’s not like Square-Enix can release a new mainline Dragon Quest game every year, after all).

YTD sales are down by nearly 60% (314 203 units vs 936 406 units), which makes it extremely unlikely for the Nintendo 3DS to reach 25 million units this year. In fact, depending on when Nintendo chooses to discontinue it, it may even never get there. But even if it doesn’t, it still became the 3rd best-selling platform after the GameBoy and the Nintendo DS, which is not an achievement any old console can boast about!
