Japan: more sales data for Week 22 2018, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 22)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 22, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 294 000 units, which is 76.18% (or 3/4) of Week 21 sales. They dropped below the 300 000 threshold.

This week, the number of new releases was cut by half compared to Week 21, and there were quite a few multiplatform titles (that sold around or less than 10 000 units). As a result, sales of new games dropped from 198 000 to only 56 000: that’s only 1/3 of Week 21 sales.

Among the new releases, Media Create chose to focus on BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, that sold about 16 000 units:

  • about 12 000 units on PlayStation 4
  • about 4 000 units on Nintendo Switch

That’s quite the difference between the two platforms, which is no surprise: this is the first time in over 7 years that a BlazBlue game was released on Nintendo Switch (the last one was BlazBlue Continuum Shift II in March 2011, which sold about 30 000 units at launch on the two platforms it was on: Nintendo DS and PSP).

For Media Create, it’s pretty clear that the BlazeBlue audience is clearly not there on Nintendo Switch.

Media Create (Day 1 sell-through)

Today, we have the Day 1 sell-through ratio for one, lone Nintendo Switch game:

  • [NSW] [PS4] Little Nightmares: Complete Edition (Bandai Namco Games) – 40%. The game sold better on Nintendo Switch.

Dengeki (Week 22)

Dengeki report about 19 000 units for BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, with:

  • about 14 000 units for the PlayStation 4 version
  • about 5 000 units for the Nintendo Switch version

The sell-through for the two versions combined is about 50%, which is quite low. Based on Famitsu data, we can safely say that the Nintendo Switch is the one that underperformed, though sales aren’t exactly great on PlayStation 4 either. Overall, it’s a rather poor debut for the game.

For Usotsuki Hime to Moumoku Ouji, Dengeki report about 17 000 units across all platforms, which is a pretty decent debut. Finally, we have Splatoon 2 with 14 000 units sold this week, and 2 400 000 units LTD.

This week, Dengeki also shared data for the current Fiscal Year (April 2nd to May 27th):

  • Hardware: 530 000 units (-25.4%) / 15.3 billion Yen (+20.4%)
  • Software: 2.94 million units (-4.6%) / 19.5 billion Yen (+10.9%)
  • Total: 34.8 billion Yen (-5.4%, 36.8 billion Yen during the previous Fiscal Year)

The data above may seem contradictory, but that’s because the games and consoles sold are more expensive, so they generate more revenue with less units sold.

Dengeki point out that even though the Nintendo Switch was just released last year, making a direct comparison a bit tough, the market is still is a rather rough spot.

Finally, here’s the market share for Hardware, which shows clearly how the market is split in two between the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4:

Hardware

  • Nintendo Switch + PlayStation 4 = 89.6%
  • Nintendo Switch = 57.5%
  • PlayStation 4 = 32.1%

Software

  • Nintendo Switch + PlayStation 4 = 81.5%
  • Nintendo Switch = 39%
  • PlayStation = 42.5%

Total

  • Nintendo Switch + PlayStation 4 = 85%
  • Nintendo Switch = 47.1%
  • PlayStation 4 = 37.9%

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:
