[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 47, 2017 (November 20th – November 26th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 47 was quite the busy week for the Japanese market, but it’s not really thanks to the new releases. There’s a few of them in the Top 20 from Media Create, including a couple of Nintendo platforms, and they all fail to impress.

Let’s start with Beyblade Burst: God, that sold 9 550 units during the first three days. That’s a little above half of what the original sold at launch (about 15 000 units, according to Famitsu). It will most likely be gone from the Top 20 altogether by next week.

The second and last entry of the week on Nintendo 3DS is Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, which sold only 4 832 units during its launch week. Obviously, that’s literally nothing compared to the original, which sold 240 000 units at launch and well over 600 000 units LTD. Then again, it’s just a “remaster” re-release, without any notable new features or content.

Those sales show that not that many people were interested in such a re-release in the first place, which was clearly targeted at hardcore Ace Attorney fans who wanted to have the entire series playable natively on Nintendo 3DS.

Capcom didn’t advertise it much, though it’s unlikely it would have sold much better if they had. No doubt the many Ace Attorney releases in the past few years, including the mobile release of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney earlier this year, didn’t help with sales either. In comparison, the Ace Attorney Trilogy sold about 24 000 units at launch according to Famitsu… and that was 3 games in 1.

Next, we have Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon that had a better second week than expected, though the drop is pretty important:

  • stand-alone: 168 978 units (-75%), and 836 417 units since launch;
  • dual-pack: 20 297 units, or 40 594 units if counted as two units (-92%), and 268 080 units since launch (536 160 units if counted as two units)
  • combined: 1 104 497 units (1 372 577 if dual-pack counted as two units)

It looks like 2 million units is a possibility for the game, but it will need strong sales during the holiday season for that to happen.

This week saw a massive increase in shipments/sales for the Nintendo Switch, and as a result, several games saw a noticeable increase in sales. That’s the case of Super Mario Odyssey, which came very close to topping 800 000 units sold this week. It sold 77 751 units (+25%), with 792 059 units since launch.

We can safely expect Super Mario Odyssey to sell over 100 000 units/week several times in December. And if you had any doubt left that it wasn’t going to reach 1 million units this very year, this week’s sales show that the only thing that could prevent that from happening is massive shortages throughout most of December.

Splatoon 2 also saw a significant increase in sales this week (+21%), with 30 275 units sold. That’s a pretty good number, though it’s clear it’s just the beginning: now that the holiday season has started, we can safely expect sales to keep going up from that week onward. Over 1 373 530 units have been sold since launch.

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it’s another game that benefited from the increased Nintendo Switch shipments: its own sales went up by 14%, with 18 846 units sold this week. That brings the total since launch to 837 850: another game that should top 1 million units sold this very year.

Launch aligned, Mario Kart 8 is now outselling this Deluxe version, but that’s only because it was released in May, so the holiday season had already started for it. Once this year’s holiday season is in full swing, Mario Kart 8 on Wii U will not stay in the lead very long!

But among those weekly increases, there’s two games that really stand out: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf on Nintendo 3DS.

The former saw its sales jump by 116%, which is not so much due to the increased Nintendo Switch shipments, but instead the release of the Explorer’s Edition. This new edition includes a map and an artbook, but costs the same as the standard edition (that it’s effectively replacing, albeit for a limited time), and it looks like it did attract a fair number of players: the game sold 15 162 units this week (+116%).

It will be interesting to see how much the it ends up selling during the holiday season. The Nintendo Switch version is standing at 657 015 units sold since launch, and it should be closer to 800 000 units by the end of the year.

As for Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo, the release of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp on smart devices has had an extremely positive impact on sales, similiar in scope with the Pokémon GO effect last year. It sold no less than 10 806 units this week, which is a 214% increase compared to Week 46 (281 571 units LTD for the Welcome amiibo edition). Yes, we’re talking of a 5 years old game right now.

It’s not clear how long Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will have a noticeable impact on sales, but one thing’s for sure: Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo is going to have a really good holiday season… then again, it was going to even without the mobile game! In fact, it’s bound to keep selling steadily well into 2018, until the Animal Crossing series finally ends on the Nintendo Switch.

The strong sales of Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo and the success of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp shows that the Animal Crossing series is still extremely popular in Japan, which bodes well for the inevitable Nintendo Switch entry!

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 12./13. [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo) – 6.256 / 54.605 (-4%). Sales are steady, which is a good sign as we’re entering the holiday season;
  • 17./12. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 4.197 / 126.530 (-37%). After the boost from the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon launch week, sales are back down to a more “normal” level;
  • 18./24. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 3.921 / 283.108. 1-2-Switch would like to remind us that yes, it’s still there, selling steadily (though not enough to appear in the Top 20 on a regular basis). It’s nearing 300 000 units sold since launch.

This week saw a massive increase in Nintendo Switch shipments, which naturally led to a massive increase in sales. The Nintendo Switch sold 145 200 units this week, which is the best week ever for the platform since launch… a really impressive number, especially as the holiday season is just getting started (Week 51 is generally the biggest).

There doesn’t seem to be any reason for such a dramatic increase: it’s just Nintendo getting ready for the holiday season. the company did promise increase shipments after all, and it increased its production capacities accordingly. It’s not clear what will be the weekly cap for the console (300 000 units/week? 400 000 units? More?

One thing’s for sure: the holiday season is shaping up pretty well for the Nintendo Switch, and that’s despite a weak line-up for November and December. More than a third-party publisher must be regretting deeply missing the boat this year. If everything goes well (ie: Nintendo ships enough consoles for that), the Nintendo Switch will outsell the Wii U before the end of the year… in other words, in less than a year!

This week, the Nintendo Switch went up, and the Nintendo 3DS went down. Sales dropped to 34 886 units, which was to be expected after the launch of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon the previous week. The public holiday on Thursday probably helped soften the drop.

Now that the holiday season is upon us, sales should go back up pretty soon, though it’s clear the Nintendo 3DS is not going to sell gangbusters in December (not with the Nintendo Switch monopolysing the attention). Unfortunately, that further confirms the handheld will end the year on a drop Year on Year. At least, it should be pretty close to 24 million units LTD by the end of December!

Finally, the Wii U sold 85 units this week.
