[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 45, 2017 (November 6th – November 12th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 45 saw the releases of quite a few games in Japan, but not all of them managed to get into the Top 20 Software from Media Create. For example, the three Warriors games from Koei-Tecmo (Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires, Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate) didn’t even chart, which means they sold less than 3 000 units each.

Such low sales are hardly surprising though: late and expensive ports of games from a genre suffering from genre fatigue were not going to sell gangbusters (and Koei-Tecmo most likely didn’t have very high expectations for it). All 3 games should end up with somewhat respectable sales (for what they are), but nothing to write home about.

One new Nintendo Switch game did manage to chart this week: Sonic Forces, which sold 4 686 units. The PlayStation 4 version actually sold better, but not by much: 5 938 units sold. One thing’s for sure: Sonic Forces sold pretty poorly, like pretty much all recent Sonic games not involving a certain plumber. That being said, it’s still the best debut for a Sonic game since the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog, in 2006!

While the hedgehog is down the gutter, the famous plumber is still up there, in the stars. Super Mario Odyssey sold pretty well during its third-week on the market, with 73 315 units sold (only -37% compared to the previous week).

The increased Nintendo Switch shipments most likely prevented a further drop… not that sales would have cratered without it. Over 650 000 units have been sold since launch, which means 700 000 units should be topped next week. Interesting fact: Super Mario Odyssey has now outsold the Nintendo Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild!

As for Splatoon 2, its sales were pretty steady (-2%), with 23 130 units sold. It remains one of the most popular games on the platforms, so it’s not surprising that sales would either go up or remain steady when Nintendo Switch shipments increase. 1 318 138 units have already been sold since launch.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also enjoyed somewhat steady sales, with 14 027 units sold (-12%). It’s now sold over 800 000 units at retail (802 472 to be more precise), which is a great result for a non-original Mario Kart entry. It certainly makes you wonder how much the game would have sold if it had not previously been released on Wii U!

Style Savvy: Styling Star had an “ok” second week, with 9 650 units sold (70% drop compared to launch week). This game is truly going to shine during the holiday period, so such meek sales are nothing to worry about (though as we mentioned last week, it’s unlikely it will end up anywhere near the LTD of the previous entries). 41 826 have been sold since launch.

Finally, here’s how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

  • 12./12. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.498 / 634.850 (-17%). Sales remain strong, though Super Mario Odyssey has already outsold (not surprising at all: 3D Mario games tend to be more popular than 3D Zelda games);
  • 18./14. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 3.862 / 115.691 (-21%). This one hasn’t left the Top 20 yet, which is a pretty positive sign;
  • 19./09. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux (Atlus) – 3.533 / 74.180 (-64%). Another game that hasn’t left the Top 20 yet, though that should definitely happen next week;
  • 20./16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.085 / 267.322 (-23%). Guess what… that one is still hanging in there, despite a slight drop in sales.

This week saw a significant increase in Nintendo Switch shipments, which allowed the console to sell almost 80 000 units. Considering this was a pretty unsignificant week (no major release), and the holiday period hasn’t kicked off yet, this certainly bodes pretty well for the weeks ahead and especially December.

Of course, even if massive shipments are expected for the holiday period, it will still be nowhere near enough to meet demand.

Meanwhile, it’s same old same old for the Nintendo 3DS. It sold 19 369 units this week, which was a slight drop compared to Week 44. Fortunately, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon comes out this very Friday, so we should expect a significant increase in sales for Week 46 (especially with the new Nintendo 2DS XL models launching). Of course, the impact in sales will be more limited than it was for Pokémon Sun and Moon.

The gap with 2016 sales is getting smaller and smaller (it’s now about 100 000 units), and at this rate, it seems unlikely 2017 will end with an increase (especially not if you take into account the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundles for 2016 sales).

Finally, the Wii U sold 36 units this week.

    I’m not surprised that Sonic Forces isn’t selling well, that game still doesn’t look all that good. I’m not sure what was in Sega’s minds when they try so hard to cater to the poisonous fan-fiction/fan-character crowd.

    “It certainly makes you wonder how much the game would have sold if it had not previously been released on Wii U!” you’re forgetting that Switch is a handheld in Japan, not a home console, so really compare it to how MK7 did in Japan, because there the Switch is seen as the 3DS’s successor, it’s why 3DS sales tanked after Switch took over. Despite what lying Reggie says, they’ve got no intention of running the 3DS business next to Switch, Iwata merged their divisions back in 2013, there is no more handheld division of Nintendo anymore, the New 2DS XL is the final ever sole handheld ever produced.
