[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 39, 2017 (September 25th – October 1st) [Top 50]

This week has several entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, and quite a few of them are on Nintendo platforms. The main release is Fire Emblem Warriors, which came out on both the Nintendo Switch and the New Nintendo 3DS. It sold 41 491 units on the former, and 18 357 units on the latter, which is a pretty satisfying result.

Here’s how the two versions of Hyrule Warriors sold (NB: Famitsu data!):

• Hyrule Warriors (Wii U): 78 773 units at launch (132 396 units LTD)
• Hyrule Warriors Legends (New 3DS): 54 856 units at launch (114 749 units LTD)

This time around, the “home console” and “handheld” versions of the game were released simultaneously, so it’s unlikely Fire Emblem Warriors will sell as much as both versions of Hyrule Warriors combined. However, it should be able to easily reach 100 000 units, and top sales of at least Hyrule Warriors Legends.

It will all depend on whether the game can sell on the long run. The Legend of Zelda series is more popular (though that depends on the entries you look at), and is more “compatible” with the action gameplay of the Warriors series than Fire Emblem (which are strategy games), so the first week performance of Fire Emblem Warriors is satisfying, and bodes well for the upcoming weeks and months.

Next, we have FIFA 18, which opened with a respectable 12 616 units sold. That’s way below what the PlayStation 4 version did, but that’s no wonder: the audience for that kind of game isn’t on Nintendo Switch yet. Quite interestingly, it looks like the Nintendo Switch version absorbed the sales from the PlayStation 3 version, which also sold about 12 000 units at launch last year (of course, it’s not really that straightforward!).

This week, Nintendo shipped many more Nintendo Switch than in past few weeks, and this clearly shows in the sales of key titles. Splatoon 2 is one of them, and it saw its sales increase by 36%, to 29 704 units. As you can see, the drop seen in past few weeks really didn’t come from declining interest in the game, it was simply a consequence of Nintendo discontinuing the Splatoon 2 Nintendo Switch bundle.

As of this week, Splatoon 2 has sold 1 190 563 units.

Pokkén Tournament DX sales dropped this week, despite the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments, but that’s because it was released the previous week (and sales increases during Week 2 are pretty rare). Still, the second week drop is not as bad as usual (only -56%), with 23 543 units sold. It looks like it should be able to reach 100 000 units sold before the end of the month (it’s currently sitting at 76 938 units sold).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is another game that saw a significant increase in sales this week, thanks to the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments. 15 098 units were sold this week: that’s 32% more than during Week 38. Since launch, 720 741 units have been sold, and if sales stay that strong, it could reach 800 000 units sometime in November… before the big holiday boost!

The same happened with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which sold 7 615 units this week… that’s a 38% increase compared to Week 38! This shows that interest in this game is still pretty strong, and that many people are buying it new despite it being widely available used. We can expect strong sales during the upcoming holiday season. So far, 598 670 units have been sold, and 600 000 units will be reached next week!

Finally, here’s how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 14./12. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 6.350 / 146.883 (-8%). Sales are quite steady, definitely helped by the bigger Nintendo Switch shipments. 150 000 units should be topped next week;
• 16./10. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} – 5.639 / 1.733.552 (-25%). Sales keep on dropping, and the game is getting closer and closer to the bottom of the Top 20. It looks like it doesn’t have many weeks left in there…
• 17./14. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) – 5.073 / 172.833 (-15%). Sales dropped this week, but said drop is pretty limited. The game is still hanging around in the Top 20… for now, at least!
• 19./21. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.419 / 36.085. The game sold out at launch, and Bandai-Namco promised additional shipments at the end of September… and it looks like they have been selling greatso far.

This week, the main point of interest is the Nintendo Switch, which sold over 73 000 units thanks to increased shipments (yes, it’s still sold out nationwide). That increase isn’t due to Fire Emblem Warriors, as it didn’t sell nearly enough for that. It’s likely Nintendo simply shipped more because it was the last week before the end of Q2 217-18 (September 30th).

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS is enjoying steady sales ahead of the release of two new colours, tomorrow (October 5th), alongside Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions. While we should expect an increase in sales next week, said increase should be limited. It’s not until November, and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, that Nintendo 3DS sales are going to see a significant increase in sales.

Sales are still down Year on Year, but 2017 is still tracking ahead of 2016 so far (as you can see in the chart below), which is a positive sign as the holiday period is drawing nearer and nearer (October is already there, after all).

Finally, the Wii U sold 68 units this week.
