Media Create – Software

Week 24 saw the release of Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure, which is the third Taiko Drum Master game on Nintendo 3DS. Unsurprisingly, it sold less than the previous entry, which itself sold less than the first one. During the first four days, this one sold 32 369 units (40 946 units according to Famitsu, who reports a 20-40% sell-through ratio for the game).

The main reason behind the drop seems to be franchise fatigue: Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure is the third entry on Nintendo 3DS, and two Taiko Drum Master were also released last year (on Wii U and PS Vita, not to mention an Idolm@ster spin-off). What’s more, the selling power of the Nintendo 3DS has been slowly eroding in the past few months, and it looks like this game wasn’t spared.

That being said, Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure first week sales are far from awful. The game is expected to keep selling during the new few weeks (what with the Summer holidays), and if everything goes well, it should sell close to 200 000 units by the end of the year.

Next, we have Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, which had a pretty average second week for the series. The game sold 25 288 units according to Media Create, which is a 87% drop compared to the first week. The second week drop is slightly worse than for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, but it remains in line with them.

The real problem isn’t so much second week sales, but launch sales. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice had a significantly worse opening (even by adding Week 2, sales are still below those of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies for launch week), and mostly sold to fans who pre-ordered the game. As mentioned last time, the anime series and the promotional campaigns don’t seem very effective so far.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is most likely the final Ace Attorney game on Nintendo 3DS, so it will be interesting to see what Capcom does in the future.

In the rest of the Media Create Top 20, there’s a couple of Nintendo 3DS which kept selling steadily, such as

Kirby: Planet Robobot (9.766 units / -16% )
Yo-kai Sangokushi (4.370 units / -11%)

As for the Splatoon and Super Mario Maker duo, they’re two of the few games with sales on the rise this week. The former sold 5 486 units during Week 24 (+5%), while the latter sold 4 281 units (+4%). It’s pretty impressive to see those two titles stilm ltrucking along so later after their release. What’s more, Wii U sales are actually down this week…

Next, we have Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics at #15, with surprisingly strong sales this week: +18% compared to last week (3 845 units sold, 174 403 units since launch). While we were expecting the game to sell on the long run, we weren’t expecting sales to pick up so early (the Summer holidays will not start for several weeks, just like the actual Olympics).

Maybe the upcoming release of the Wii U version (now available via the Nintendo eShop) is having a positive impact on sales?

Finally, we have Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, which makes its comeback in the Top 20 with 2 594 units sold. The game has been bought 607 514 times since launch, and by the end of the Summer holidays, it should end somewhere around 650 000 units sold by the end of the Summer holidays in August.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing much to say about the Wii U (once again). Sales are as flat as they can be, with 3 870 units sold. As explained last week, the release of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics should be have a limited impact on sales. Not to mention Nintendo still sending limited amount of Wii U to retailers…

As for the Nintendo 3DS, are slightly down Week on Week, and Year on Year. The main reason for the drop is the release of the new colours of New Nintendo 3DS XL last week, which boosted sales. When you look at New Nintendo 3DS XL sales, you notice that’s where most of the drop in sales come from. In the next few weeks, sales should remain steady, until Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura comes out on July 16th.
