Japan – Media Create sales for Week 48, 2015 (Nov. 23 – 29) [Top 50]

Update

We just added the full Top 50 to the post.

***

Several games came out on Nintendo platforms last week in Japan, but the start was obviously Monster Hunter X. Unsurprisingly, it literally slayed the competition, with 1 488 367 units sold (far, far above #2!). As mentioned in this post, Media Create’s numbers are slightly worse than Famitsu’s, but that’s because the former doesn’t take into account download cards.

The sellthrough ratio for Monster Hunter X is between 80-100% according to Famitsu, but in truth, the game quickly became impossible to find in stores. This led many players to go get the game from the Nintendo eShop, which means the actual sales are even better than what Famitsu and Media Create reported. New shipments are expected for this week-end (according to several retailers), which should somewhat limit the usual second week drop.

Monster Hunter X may be a spin-off, it certainly didn’t sell like one. If Capcom had shipped more copies, it would definitely have outsold Monster Hunter 4G at retail alone (vs retail + digial for Monster Hunter 4G). In other words, Capcom is definitely pretty happy about those sales, which should easily top 2 million units before the end of the year.

Monster Hunter XAt #2, we find Aikatsu! My No.1 Stage! with 24 918 copies sold. This is not the best of debuts (and it definitely pales in comparison with Monster Hunter X… though such a comparison is utterly absurd to begin with!), but it’s still pretty much correct. According to Famitsu, the sellthrough ratio is around 20-40%, but Bandai-Namco and retailers most likely expect it to sell during the holiday period.

This is also true for Taiko no Tatsujin: Atsumete Tomodachi Daisakusen!, which sold 10 007 units during its first week. This is worse than the first entry on Wii U (in 2013), but slightly better than the second one (in 2014). The sellthrough ratio is also better: 20-40% according to Famitsu. As usual, games like this one usually sell in the long run, and the holiday period will definitely help.

Talking of the holiday period, it “officially” started last week with the public holiday on Monday. Several games on Nintendo platforms got a remarkable boost, especially on Wii U with Splatoon (23 823 units sold, +35%) and Super Mario Maker (18 639 units sold, +41%).

Various Nintendo 3DS games also sold pretty well, with +7% for Yo-kai Watch Busters. This spin-off just keeps on selling, and it’s certainly not going to stop any time soon. First of all, there’s the major update on December 12th. Then, there’s the second Yo-kai Watch movie hitting theatres on December 19th. And obviously, the holiday period will provide a sizeable boost for sales, too.

There’s also Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2, which also saw its sales increase this week (+5%, 12 115 units sold). Retailers certainly weren’t mistaken when they were expecting the game to sell well during the holiday period… and this is just the beginning. As for Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, it’s back in the Top 20 this week, and will most likely stay there until the end of the year.

Finally, we have Pokémon Rumble World (with a limited drop for its second week on the market), and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (with a pretty poor second week on the market). For both games, the sellthrough ratio is still between 0-20%, and it’s pretty bad news for Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. Indeed, retailers will have no choice but to slash its price in order to sell all the units they have left in stock… and it most likely won’t be enough.

Hardware-wise, everything’s going pretty well for Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS saw a very sharp increase in sales during Week 48 in Japan: 131 023 units were sold. This is obviously due to the release of Monster Hunter X, as it seems many players thought this was the right time to upgrade. The game was bundled with a New Nintendo 3DS XL in a Special Pack, which was most likely pretty popular (unfortunately, Media Create does not give any data for it).

On the same day, Nintendo also released four different New Nintendo 3DS Packs, and the increase in sales for the New Nintendo 3DS isn’t enough to say how popular they were. However, they are special bundles for Christmas, so most of the sales should happen closer to that day.

Compared to last year, sales of the Nintendo 3DS are up for Week 48: 131 023 units in 2015 vs 106 517 units in 2014 (it was the week just after Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire released). Obviously, this will not be nearly enough to close the gap for the full year (it’s way too late for that), but Nintendo is most definitely pleased to see its handheld still has plenty of fight left. After all, it’s going to celebrate its 5th anniversary in February.

With the holiday period now in full swing, and Japanese people starting to do their shopping for Christmas, sales of the Nintendo 3DS will remain strong throughout the month. Usually, sales drop during the week following a major release, but this time around, said drop should be rather limited (if there’s a drop at all). With Monster Hunter X, Nintendo has managed to kick off the holiday period in the best way possible for its handheld.

This is also true for the Wii U, which also saw its sales increase during Week 48 in Japan. This is due to both the public holiday on Monday and the start of the holiday shopping. With 20 256 units sold, the Wii U isn’t even the best-selling console in Japan (that’s the PlayStation 4), but it’s performing much better than last year during the same week (when only 12 496 units were sold).

With Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, Christmas 2015 should be pretty good for the Wii U in Japan. It’s certainly not going to break sales record, but sales are definitely going to be much healthier than usual. It will be interesting to see how high it’s going to go, especially compared to the holiday period in 2013 (which had two really agressive bundle, offering the best value ever for a Wii U Premium Pack).
