Japan – Media Create sales for Week 46, 2015 (Nov. 9 – 15) [Top 50]

During Week 46, only one game on Nintendo platforms managed to chart in Media Create’s Top 20: Project X Zone 2 – Brave New World, which landed at #2 with 40 945 units (including the Limited Editions). This is significantly worse than the first Project X Zone, which sold over 90 000 units during the first four days.

There’s several reasons Project X Zone 2: Brave New World sold like it did. The first one is the most obvious: this is a sequel on the same platform, and sequels generally tend to sell worse than their predecessor. What’s more, Project X Zone 2 didn’t really have the novelty factor, and players now know what the game is all about. What’s more, many of them may have not enjoyed the original (too repetitive), or are content enough with just one game.

Unfortunately, this kind of game doesn’t tend to sell on long periods of time, so it’s likely Project X Zone 2: Brave New World will not manage to reach 100 000 units sold before a long while (if at all). It’s clear Bandai-Namco is expecting better sales in the West (which is why they beefed up the localisation), but there’s no doubt the company isn’t quite happy about those sales in Japan.

Some other games came out during Week 46 in Japan, including Art Academy Atelier. Unsurprisingly, the game didn’t even chart (according to some reports, the sell through ratio for the first day is around 9%), and we will have to wait a little bit before finding out how much it sold during its first days on the market.

Overall, sales are down for pretty much everything, including Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2, which had a fairly standard second week. It sold 19 605 units during its second week, and 93 429 in total. Unless something major happens this week, it should reach 100 000 units sold during Week 47.

Sales may be down for pretty much all games, but there’s one exception: Splatoon. Of course, there’s a good reason for that: the Splatoon Wii U Premium Pack came out on November 12th, and boosted sales. In fact, most of the increase seem to come from the bundle: Splatoon sold roughly 13 000 units last week, which gives an increase of ~8 000 units for this week… which is more or less the same amount of additional Wii U sold this week compared to Week 45.

Of course, this doesn’t mean the increase in Wii U sales is only due to the bundle, but it’s the main reason the console sold better this week.

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS is slightly down this week with 28 593 units sold. Unsurprisingly, the release of Project X Zone 2: Brave New World didn’t have any impact whatsoever, which is normal for a sequel to a game already available on Nintendo 3DS. Sales are still significantly down compared to last year, but it’s back as the best-selling console in Japan this week.

As for the Wii U, it’s the opposite: it sold better this week, primarily because of the Splatoon bundle. With 17 921 units sold, the Wii U is still doing significantly better than last year, and this is entirely due to Splatoon. Sales are up week on week, and are finally back above the 10 000 units/week threshold. It should remain there at least until Early 2016, with the Holiday period just around the corner.
