Japan – Media Create sales for Week 36, 2015 (August 31 – September 6th) [Top 50]

Metal Gear Solid V was THE star of Week 36 in Japan, but the Nintendo platforms and games still kept on selling rather well nonetheless. The only new release of the week for the Nintendo 3DS is LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin, which is #11 with only 5 011 units sold (roughly 30% of all copies sent to retailers were sold). This is a rather mediocre debut, though in line with most of the other LEGO games in Japan.

Next, we have Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on Nintendo 3DS, which had a pretty unsurprising second week: 106 823 additional copies were sold, a drop of 82% compared to Week 35. In total, 691 539 units were sold at retail, which is a pretty solid performance for this remake of the PS2 classic. When all is said and done, total sales should end up somewhere around 800 000 or 900 000 units.

In the rest of the chart, everything is down week on week, including Splatoon which dropped below the 20 000 units sold/week threshold for the first time since launch. However, there is one exception: Yo-kai Watch Busters: Aka Neko-dan / Shiro Inu-tai, with +1% compared to Week 36 (49 542 units this week, and 1 450 344 in total).

That being said, the other Nintendo 3DS games in the chart still kept on selling steadily, such as Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer which is nearing the 1 million units threshold at retail, or Animal Crossing: New Leaf which is still in the Top 20 despite being almost 3 years old.

Hardware-wise, sales are also down week on week for both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, but they still remain above their respective level during the same week in 2014. Let’s start with the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 34 756 units this week (vs 29 555 in 2014, and 48 919 last week), and had to give up its title of best-selling video game platform in Japan because of the release of Metal Gear Solid V.

As for the Wii U, its sales are also down week on week, but the console did manage to remain above the 10 000 units/week level, which is definitely a plus for Nintendo. Next week will see the release of Super Mario Maker, along with two new bundles, so sales are bound to go up (though the boost should be limited), so it’s going to be a little while before the Wii U drops below the 10 000 units/week level.
