Japan: more sales data for Week 29 2018, Taiko no Tatsujin; 2.5 millions for Splatoon 2 (Media Create, Dengeki)
More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!
Media Create (Week 29)
Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 364 000 units, which is 89.38% of Week 28 sales. Since sales of new games only account for 40% of Week 28 sales, the ratio of new games in total Software sales dropped from 44.34% to 21.27%. Sales of previously released games did increase: they account for 126.41% of Week 28 games, but that wasn’t enough to compensate for the drop in sales for new releases, and so total Software sales are down.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun sold 70 000 units, which is one of the best opening in a while for the series. Here’s how two previous entries sold:
- Taiko no Tatsujin: Chibi Dragon to Fushigina Orb (Nintendo 3DS, 2012): 65 000 units at launch;
- Taiko no Tatsujin Wii U Version! (Wii U, 2013): 19 000 units at launch.
As you can see, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun did better than those two games, which is a really positive sign. Media Create point out that generally, launch week only account for 10-20% of total sales for Taiko no Tatsujin games, since they tend to sell well on the long run (and especially during holiday seasons).
In other words, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun could end up selling pretty well if its sales trajectory ends up the same as previous entries. It should prove pretty popular during the Summer holidays (that started this week), and during the end of year holiday season.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)
This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games:
- [NSW] Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 (Capcom) – 40%. Ok debut, though it’s seemingly sold less than the PlayStation 4 version (for now);
- [PS4] [NSW] Disgaea 1 Complete (Nippon Ichi Software) – 20%. Low debut, but the series hasn’t been performing well in Japan lately (and this is but a remake);
- [PS4] [NSW] Rocket League: Collector’s Edition (Psyonix) – 10%. Very low debut, pretty usualy for late physical release of digital-only games;
- [NSW] Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Bethesda Softworks) – 10%. Very low debut, not surprising for a late port of a game that really didn’t set the charts on fire on PlayStation 4 to begin with.

Dengeki (Week 29)
Dengeki report that Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun sold about 71 000 units, with a surprisingly high sell-through for such a game: 50%. Additional shipments during the week-end helped prevent shortages (unlike a certain Octopath Traveler). It’s the second best debut for a Taiko no Tatsujin game in the past 5-6 years, and only Taiko no Tatsujin Wii Gouka Ban did better with 113 000 units sold at launch (over 623 000 units LTD) back in 2012.
Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that Taiko no Tatsujin games usually tend to sell on the long run. On Nintendo platforms specifically, the average ratio of launch week sales in total sales can go as low as 15.3%, and each game has become a hit, and so they naturally expect the same for thist first Nintendo Switch entry.
This week, Splatoon 2 sold about 21 000 units, which brings total sales to over 2.5 million units (2 509 380 units): it’s the first tracker to report that, since both Media Create and Famitsu have been reporting lower sales. They point out that whole sales stabilised this week, they’ve been growing steadily: about 15 000 units weekly, and 60 000 units monthly.
As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold about 4.69 million units, which means Splatoon 2 has an attachment rate of about 53.5%. In other words: more than 1 new Nintendo Switch owner out of 2 bought the console specifically for this game. Now that’s what you call a system seller, and it’s been one since it launched last year.
This Fall, the Nintendo Switch is getting some heavy-hitters, namely Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (releasing on November 16th and December 7th respectively). Those two are definitely system sellers, so the Summer season is the last period where Splatoon 2 will be the main system seller. It will be interesting to see how far it will be able to carry the Nintendo Switch until it has to share the spotlight with the two games we just mentioned.
This week, Nintendo 3DS Sales increased by 38.9% and went above the 10 000 units/weeks threshold for the first time in a long while, thanks to the New Nintendo 2DS XL bundles with Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo and Mario Kart 7. However, this didn’t change much: the market is still dominated by the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4, which account for 85% of total Hardware sales.
