[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 26, 2018 (June 25th – July 1st) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 26 saw the release of a few games, but they didn’t sell nearly as much as last week’s new releases. Only one of them is on Nintendo Switch, and it’s Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. According to Media Create, it sold 6 431 units at launch, which is a respectable (though unimpressive) debut.

Since this is the second re-release of the game, and the (main) series itself hasn’t found its way to a Nintendo platform in several decades, it’s no wonder sales weren’t better than this. Here’s how the previous two versions of the game sold at launch (NB: Famitsu data):

PlayStation Vita (2016): 47 681 units at launch, 83 816 units LTD
PlayStation 4 (2017): 30 764 units at launch, 70 515 units LTD

Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely the Nintendo Switch version ever comes close to even the launch sales of the previous versions (let alone LTD sales).

New releases didn’t sell all that much, which is why Mario Tennis Aces and Minecraft had no trouble staying at #1 and going up by one spot respectively. Mario Tennis Aces sold 49 143 units, which is a 60% drop compared to launch week: an unsually soft drop for a second week. No doubt sales will remain strong throughout Summer! Over 172 000 units have been sold since launch, and it will reach 200 000 units next week!

As for Minecraft, it had an even better second week, with 25 773 units sold: that’s -58% compared to launch week. Again, we can expect steady sales for this game in the long run, well beyond the Summer season. Over 87 537 units have already been sold, and the 100 000 units milestone will be reached next week.

Next, we have Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 and #5… just like last week. Media Create reports an increase in sales for both games, with Splatoon 2 selling 16 266 units (+10%), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling 10 774 units (+5%).

The former is getting pretty close to the 2.5 million milestone at retail, with 2 140 990 units sold (it will reach 2.5 million units in August). As for the latter, it’s surely making its way towards 2 million units, a milestone it will reach before the end of the year.

Quite interestingly, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are the only two evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch that saw an increase in sales. The other 3 all saw a very small drop in sales. Of course, it’s hardly cause for concern, far from it!

Kirby Star Allies sold 6 379 additional units this week, bringing the total to 546 771 units at retail. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild more or less sold the same amount, with 6 143 units (-5%) this week, but double the sales since launch (1 030 773 units). Finally, sales for Super Mario Odyssey were basically flat, with 5 058 units sold (-2%) this week and 1 756 088 units LTD.

All the games we’ve just talked about (except Ys VIII: Lacrimosa) are bound to keep selling steadily throughout Summer, and those that will drop from Top 20 during that period will only do so because of popular new releases.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

12./09. [NSW] Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo) – 4.757 / 181.880 (-15%). It’s still on like Donkey Kong in Japan, but sales keep dropping. Fortunately, the Summer holidays are drawing near and it’s unlikely to drop from the Top 20 any time soon;
15./12. [3DS] Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 3.898 / 1.656.991 (+1%). As the Summer holidays draws near, it’s quite refreshing to see sales increase. It doesn’t look like Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! is having a negative impact on sales whatsoever;
16./14. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit (Nintendo) – 3.342 / 196.279 (+4%). Sales increased slightly this week, which is a positive sign ahead of the Summer holidays;
20./20. [NSW] FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts) – 2.046 / 111.324 (+7%). Thanks to the surprisingly good performance of Japan at the World Cup, FIFA 18 is staying one more week in the Top 20 from Media Create!

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch is still doing fairly well: its sales actually went up this week, thanks to pay day. It sold 50 762 units, which is roughly 2 000 units more than during the week with both Mario Tennis Aces and Minecraft. That’s also twice better than last year during the same week, which shows just how bad shortages were back then (there are pretty much non-existent this year).

The Nintendo Switch is getting closer to the 5 million units milestone, that it should be able to reach by the end of August. It will need to sell at least 58 000 units every week to do so, which is possible but not guaranteed yet: it will all depend on how strong sales are during the Summer holidays.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales are slightly up this week, but it’s nothing to write home about: Sales went from 6 812 units to 7 323 units… hardly the most impressive of increases!

With the recent announcement of 3 new New Nintendo 2DS XL models, it will be interesting to see how the Nintendo 3DS ends up selling throughout the Summer holidays (especially without a game of the same caliber as Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age).
