Japan – Media Create sales for Week 22, 2015 (May 25 – 31) [Top 50]
Week 22 was quite important for the Wii U in Japan, because of Splatoon that came out on Thursday. This new IP from Nintendo had a pretty satisfying debut, with over 144 818 units sold during the first four days. This is, by far, one of the best first week ever for a Wii U game, and one of the best new IP launches in Japan in recent history. Apparently, over 90% of all units sent to retailers were sold, and many stores were out of stock come Sunday evening.
The launch of Splatoon had a pretty positive impact on Wii U sales, allowing the console to become the best-selling platform in Japan… something that didn’t happen very often since launch! Now, it just remains to be seen just how well Splatoon will keep on selling in the upcoming months. Will it become an ever-green title à la Mario Kart 8?
Talking of Mario Kart 8, the game really benefited from the launch of Splatoon: it sold over 11 000 units during week 22, mainly thanks to new Wii U owners buying the Premium Pack with the game bundled. Since launch, Mario Kart 8 has sold over 1 million units in total, including bundles (1.006.719 to be more precise) !
Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai Deluxe is #2, and sold 41 442 units at launch. While this may seem disappointing compared to the previous entries on Nintendo 3DS, over 40 000 units is actually pretty good for a mere “Deluxe” version with only one new song and various additions. Finally, Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki is #7, and had a decent first week with almost 10 000 units sold.
Hardware-wise, the Wii U became the best-selling platform in Japan with 17 713 units sold: that’s over twice as much as during week 21. Here’s the comparison between the launch of Mario Kart 8 (Week 22, 2014) and the launch of Splatoon (Week 22, 2015):
– Week 22 2014: 19 312 units sold;
– Week 22, 2015: 17 713 units sold.
In other words, Splatoon managed to pull Hardware sales almost at the same level as Mario Kart 8, which is quite remarkable for a brand new IP. It was able to bring in new players who weren’t interested in the Wii U before, and it didn’t just sell to players who already owned it. Unfortunately, sales are bound to start dropping again pretty fast…
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are slightly up this week, with 17 606 units sold. However, sales are still down significantly year on year (- 6000 units, more or less), and the gap between 2014 and 2015 LTP just keeps on getting wider.
