Japan – Media Create sales for Week 21, 2015 (May 18 – 24) [Top 50]

Week 20 was the worst week ever for the Japanese video game market, but it looks like Week 21 wasn’t much better. This time around, there is no new game on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20, but previously-released games such as Mario Kart 8 or Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire just keep on selling steadily.

Let’s take Mario Kart 8 for example: it sold 5 758 units this week, and 995 065 units since launch (including bundles). It’s pretty much guaranteed to reach 1 million units sold next week, especially with the launch of Splatoon (which should boost Wii U sales). Indeed, Nintendo’s next major game on the Wii U has been enjoying some solid pre-orders so far, though we’ll have to wait a bit before we get concrete numbers.

As for Hardware, sales are as poor as last week. The Nintendo 3DS is still the best-selling console in Japan, but sales are down week on week (15 257 units during Week 21 vs 16 355 units during Week 20) and year on year (15 257 units during Week 21, 2015 vs 23 224 units during Week 21, 2014).

Finally, some slightly positive news: Wii U sales are on the rise, mainly due to the anticipation for Splatoon (already available on the Japanese Nintendo eShop). 7 611 units were sold during Week 21, as opposed to 6 428 during Week 20. That being said, the Wii U is down year on year, as 9 024 units were sold during the same week, in 2014.
