[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 7, 2020 (February 10 – February 16) [Top 30]
Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 7, 2020 in Japan.
Famitsu
Week 7 was another relatively quiet week for the Japanese market, though at least there’s a new Nintendo Switch game in the Top 10 Software this time around. That game is Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s, which is off to a great start (much better than expected) with 53 606 units sold during the first 4 days on the market.
In comparison, the latest entry (Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone DX on PlayStation 4, released in 2017) sold 33 527 units at launch and 42 178 units LTD, which means Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s has already outsold it. Not bad for a “new” game that isn’t even new (it’s based on the PlayStation 4 game, which is getting the extra content as DLC)!
Unfortunately, sales are bound to drop sharply next week, as SEGA was caught unaware and didn’t prepare enough copies to ship to retailers. Due to shortages, the game is now difficult to find in stores, and SEGA have warned that it would take a little while for new copies to reach retailers.
It’s pretty safe to expect Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone DX to sell at least 100 000 units LTD; the real question is: will it reach 200 000 units?
Notable events this week:
- 02./03. [NSW] Pokemon Sword / Shield (Pokemon Co.) – 24.534 / 3.427.385 (+6%). The release of Pokémon Home had a positive impact on sales, and is the reason this game is one of the two in the Top 10 Software to see an increase in sales this week;
- 04./07. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 11.275 / 1.263.898 (+24%). A rather unexpected and significant increase in sales this week, maybe due to the increase in Nintendo Switch Lite sales;
- 06./05. [NSW] Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch (Nintendo) – 9.367 / 151.548 (-3%). It has now sold over 150 000 units since launch, and sales remain strong and steady.
Unfortunately, shortages are only getting worse for Ring Fit Adventure, which saw its sales drop by 56% this week.

Famitsu – Hardware
This week, Hardware sales went pretty much as expected for the Nintendo Switch. Its sales dropped, due to the impact of the Coronavirus on production and shipments of the OG model. And as a result, quite a lot of people decided to get a Nintendo Switch Lite instead of waiting for more stock to reach retailers, which is hardly surprising with Animal Crossing: New Horizons just around the corner.
The Nintendo Switch sold 80 312 units (down from 101 141 units during Week 6 2020), with the Lite model accounting for 63 443 units. In comparison, the OG model only sold 16 869 units this week, as opposed to 79 532 during Week 6.
It’s pretty safe to expect the Lite model to keep dominating sales in the near future, at least until the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle is out. But on the same day, the new Nintendo Switch Lite colour will also be released, so it’s not like Nintendo Switch Lite sales are going to drop off a cliff.
The reason the Lite model is currently outselling the OG model is because the former is still readily available in stores, but there’s little doubt shortages won’t spare it for very long. Unless the Coronavirus situation significantly improves soon, allowing for production to resume normally, the Lite will inevitably become hard to find in stores, especially as demand for the Nintendo Switch is not going to drop any time soon.
Despite shortages, the Nintendo Switch is still selling more than last year: 80 312 units for Week 7 2020 vs 64 313 units for Week 7 2019. The gap between YTD sales in 2020 and 2019 is now 200 000 units, with 821 865 units so far in 2020 and 623 865 after the same amount of weeks in 2019. LTD sales now stand at 12 205 379 units; unfortunately, shortages are going to delay the 13 million units milestone.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales slightly increased this week. It sold 757 units, as opposed to 580 units during Week 6, and 3 890 units during Week 7 2019. YTD sales now stand at 8 393 units (vs. 56 051 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales are now at 24 504 707 units.
