[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 5, 2020 (January 27 – February 02) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 5, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 5 was another quiet week for the Japanese market, with not a single new game in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu. In fact, there’s nothing much to say about Software sales this week, as we find the usual faces in the Top 10.

Ring Fit Adventure is back at #1 with 30 111 units sold (-23%), despite seemingly endless shortages. Demand remains strong, and it really does not look like Nintendo will be able to fully meet it any time soon. Since launch, over 650 000 units have been sold (652 757 units to be precise), with the 700 000 units milestone coming in a couple of weeks.

Overall, Software sales are down this week, but the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are faring better with sales either very slightly down…

  • Brain Training for Nintendo Switch with 11 958 units sold (-7%)
  • Minecraft with 10 067 units sold (-7%)
  • Splatoon 2 with 5 640 units sold (-5%)

… or very slightly up:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 10 592 units sold (+7%)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 9 810 units sold (+9%)
  • Super Mario Party with 5 781 units sold (+5%), which makes its comeback in the Top 10.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are on the rise, and it has a noticeable impact on Software sales.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are back up, despite a complete lack of notable releases to boost them. In fact, Nintendo even went and announced an Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle, but with pre-orders not opening before this Saturday (February 8th). This just goes to show how strong anticipation for the game is at the moment, though it helps that the bundle does not offer any sort of discount (it’s the same price as the game + console separately).

The Nintendo Switch sold 75 922 units this week, as opposed to 67 987 units the previous week. The increase is nothing mindblowing in itself, but the fact that it happened during such a quiet week is certainly interesting. In comparison, the console sold 66 448 units last year during the same week, when sales were boosted by new shipments of the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! bundles.

Nintendo Switch Lite sales are quite flat (21 049 units this week, vs. 22 267 units the previous week), and it’s from the OG model side that the increase comes from. It sold 54 873 units this week, nearly 10 000 units more than last wek. It’s certainly interesting that sales increased for this model in particular, given the bundle announced by Nintendo does not include a Lite model as expected.

This week, the Nintendo Switch hit another milestone: 12 million units LTD (12 024 926 units to be precise). The next one, 13 million units, should be reached before the end of Q2 2020 (June 30th), but when exactly will depend on how big the boost provided by the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is.

One thing’s for sure: the gap between 2020 and 2019 sales is only going to keep widening in the near future. So far, the console has sold 641 495 units this year alone, as opposed to 498 510 units in 2019 after the same amount of weeks. The first million will come even earlier this year, especially with Animal Crossing on the horizon.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sales keep dropping with 599 units this week (vs. 718 units last week, and 4 134 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 7 056 units (vs. 48 189 units last year), and 24 503 370 units LTD.
