[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 4, 2020 (January 20 – January 26) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 4, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 4 was rather quiet for the Japanese market, with not a single new game in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu.

Instead, we have the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch, with Ring Fit Adventure still enjoying great popularity. It’s the only game that didn’t see its sales drop this week, with 39 217 units sold (+9%); despite increased shipments, demand is still far from being met, and so sales remain strong. The game has now sold over 600 000 units since launch (622 646 units to be precise), and the 1 million units milestone is all but guaranteed at this point.

As for Splatoon 2, it’s finally back in the Top 10 Software with 5 915 units sold this week, and 3 301 208 units LTD. It’s now been outsold by Pokémon Sword and Shield, which is already at 3 350 308 units LTD, and isn’t done selling (not by a long shot: the next mainline game is still quite a long away). The next “target” for Pokémon is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, currently standing at 3 532 729 units.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week again, Hardware sales dropped, which is pretty much a standard occurence in January, especially when there’s no major releases to boost sales. But despite the drop, Nintendo Switch sales remain fairly strong with 67 987 units (vs. 96 458 units the past week), which is significantly better than last year during the same week (51 556 units).

So far, 2020 is going pretty well for Nintendo’s console, carried by the strong sales of 2019 titles such as Pokémon Sword and Shield and Ring Fit Adventure, but also anticipation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons (still not available for pre-purchase in Japan!). It’s sold 565 573 units in less than a month, which is nearly 150 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (432 062 units to be precise).

Next week, the Nintendo Switch should top 12 million units sold in Japan; it’s sold 11 949 004 units as of Week 4 2020, and only needs to sell 51 000 units during Week 5 2020 to reach the next milestone.

Once again, the OG model is the most popular with 45 720 units sold vs. 22 267 units sold for the Lite model. Only the expected Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle(s) will be enough for the Lite model to outsell the OG model, and even then, it will most likely not last for very long (a couple of weeks at most).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sales are quite flat: 718 units (vs. 766 units the previous week, and 4 654 units in 2019), which brings YTD sales to 6 457 units (vs. 44 055 units last year). LTD sales now stand at 24 502 771 units.
