[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 39, 2019 (September 23th – 29th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 39, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 39 was a pretty busy week for the Japanese video games market, with quite a lot of new games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu. The biggest release of the week is Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, which is off to a fantastic start with 302 204 units sold. That’s much better than usual for a late port, but that’s because it’s not quite a late port in the first place.

After all, Square-Enix put a lot of effort into this release, which has a significant amount of additional content, and it was also heavily promoted. It definitely was not a quick port to get a few extra sales (which are pretty commonplace on Nintendo Switch), as Square-Enix made sure this new version was worth it for both newcomers and players who already played the game on Nintendo 3DS and/or PlayStation 4. Those sales show that it was the right strategy.

Here’s how the original versions of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition sold at launch:

  • Nintendo 3DS: 1 130 468 units
  • PlayStation 4: 950 338 units

It’s hard to say how much the game will end up selling in the long run. The Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 versions quickly ran out of steam, but the Nintendo Switch is a particularly healthy platform, so it’s possible sales will not drop off a cliff in the next few weeks. At the very least, this version of the game should be able to sell over 500 000 units LTD (including digital sales).

As mentioned in the past few days, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout is off to a great start with over 85 000 units sold at retail, including 25 538 units on Nintendo Switch. The game pretty much sold out during launch week, which is pretty bad news for the Nintendo Switch version at retail, with how slow it is to get new copies shipped to retailers (unless they have been prepared in advance).

It will certainly be interesting to see how the game is going to sell in the next few weeks, what with the shortages at retail. One thing’s for sure, though: this is by far the most successful Atelier game in a while.

Next, here’s how the other games in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu fared this week:

  • 04./01. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo) – 45.775 / 187.150 (-68%). Decent second week. Sales will top 200 000 units next week;
  • 10./04. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 14.731 / 644.445 (-1%). The massive influx of new Nintendo Switch owners is good news for this game. Sales are flat this week, and the 650 000 units milestone will be reached next week.

Famitsu – Hardware

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales dropped this week, but they do remain pretty strong. This is due to the following factors:

  • the release of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, and especially the special Hardware bundle (which is the reason why sales of the OG Nintendo Switch model increased so much this week)
  • the public holiday on Monday
  • the tax increase on October 1st, which led a certain number of people to buy the console before the price increase (though it’s not exactly easy to quantify that).

The Nintendo Switch sold nearly 200 000 units this week, with 196 489 units sold to be precise (80 575 units for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and 115 732 units for the OG model). That’s nearly 5 times more than the same week last year (about 43 197 units), which brings total sales this year to 2 518 642 units. The gap between 2019 sales and 2018 is nearing 1 million units (YTD sales were at 1 762 517 units as of Week 39, 2018), which is quite impressive given the holiday season is still several months away.

Right now, it’s impossible to say which Nintendo Switch model will sell more in the long run, but this week proves once again that the Lite model is not seen as a replacement by Japanese players.

Quite interestingly, Nintendo 3DS sales also increased this week with 2 384 units sold (vs. 1 687 units last week, and 6 651 units last year), bringing YTD sales to 165 590 units (vs. 440 487 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales to 24 470 554 units.
