[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 29, 2019 (July 15th – July 21st) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 29, 2019 in Japan.

This week, there’s only one entry in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu, and it’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. It sold about 9 424 units at retail, which is pretty low, but still a respectable result for the series in Japan.

In comparison, the first entry only sold 5 000 units on Wii and PlayStation 3 back in 2007. It’s no wonder this new game sold better, but it’s not really an achievement. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to sell in the long run like Nintendo games usually do in Japan. Of course, it’s not that big a deal for Nintendo, as North America (and Europe) is clearly the main target for this game.

Next, let’s take a look at how the other games in the Top 10 are faring:

• 02./01. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 46.065 / 38.142 (-16%). Sales remain strong, and ahead of Super Mario Maker on Wii U;
• 05./03. [NSW] Yo-kai Watch 4: We Are Looking Up at the Same Sky(Level 5) – 9.608 / 232.399 (-22%). Sales remain decent, but not really all that impressive so far;
• 07./04. [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) – 9.074 / 114.672 (-20%). Ok sales so far ahead of the Summer holiday season;
• 08./05. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 8.782 / 3.167.386 (-4%). Sales remain strond and steady, which bodes well for the upcoming Summer holidays season;
• 09./06. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.905 / 2.372.564 (+3%). There really is no stopping Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, is there?
• 10./07. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} (¥3.600) – 7.439 / 852.499 (+4%). It has now sold over 850 000 units, and it should reach 900 000 units sometimes in September.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales took a hit despite Monday being a public holiday. It looks like the recent Hardware announcements, especially the new OG model with improved battery life, had an impact on sales. However, it’s not clear what that impact will be during the Summer holiday seasons. Of course, those sales are not lost: the new model and the Nintendo Switch Lite will more than compensate for any drop in sales in late July and August.

With 45 596 units sold during Week 29, sales dropped by about 10 000 units compared to Week 28. Sales would have been stable (or slightly up) Week on Week; if not for the Hardware announcements. Unfortunately, sales are back down Year on Year, with 53 644 units for Week 29 2018. Summer 2018 sales were already not all that great compared to 2017, but there’s the distinct possibility 2019 will be even worse.

So far this year, the Nintendo Switch has sold 1 660 798 units, which is about 350 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks. The gap will become smaller through August, but should widen again once the new model with improved battery life is out (not to mention the Nintendo Switch Lite a couple of weeks later). The console has now sold over 8 550 344 units LTD.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are stable as usual. The handheld sold 2 517 units this week, as opposed to 2 361 units the previous week, and 10 552 units last year during the same week. So far this year, it has sold 137 773 units, which is nearly 3 times less than last year after the same amount of weeks (356 725 units). Nintendo 3DS sales now stand at 24 442 737 units.
