[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 21, 2019 (May 20th – May 26th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 21, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 21 is part of a really slow period for the video games market in Japan, and the sales data is not going to contradict that statement! There were a few releases during that week, but they all failed to make a big splash (or a splash period for some of them).

The Resident Evil: Origins Collection sold really poorly, with only 4 081 units sold during launch week. That’s much worse than the PlayStation 4 version (19 717 units at launch), and even worse than the Resident Evil Revelations Collection on Nintendo Switch (5 892 units at launch).

Such a poor performance is not a surprise, since that particular release had a lot going against it:

  • it’s a late port of Remasters, originally released on PlayStation 3 then PlayStation 4;
  • just like in North America, only Resident Evil 0 is on the cart (Resident Evil 1 has to be downloaded), significantly reducing the value of the package (and basically preventing re-sale, to make things even worse)

Several games did not manage to chart:

  • the Nintendo Switch version of Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, which means it sold less than 3 767 units. This was expected, because the fanbase for Assassin’s Creed games is firmly established on PlayStation 4, and the game did not even do that hot on that platform…
  • Team Sonic Racing also did not manage to chart, not even the Nintendo Switch version (which is expected to be the best-selling version). The fact that Sonic is now a nobody in Japan (all games tend to sell rather poorly, unless there’s Mario in it), but the competition from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did not help (especially as this one isn’t done selling yet!). In comparison, Sonic Racing Transformed sold about 5 000 units at launch on Wii U and PlayStation 3 (mere days before Mario Kart 8).

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped to 25 936 units, which is the lowest point they have hit since… May 2018. We’ve already said it several times before, but May-June is one of the slowest (if not the slowest) period for the video games market in Japan, and Hardware data this week once again clearly shows it.

The drop seems quite important this week (32 564 units vs 25 936 units), but that’s because of the small bump caused by the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct the previous week. Sales went back to a more “normal” level this week, which is why it looks like sales dropped more than expected (especially as sales are basically flat for all other consoles). The restock of the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! had literally no impact on sales whatsoever.

Unfortunately, that drop below the 30 000 units/weeks threshold means that weekly sales are back below their 2018 levels. Of course, it’s only temporary, and unlikely to have any impact on the long term. In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold only only 31 673 units during Week 21 2018, which already was not that great a week.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold 1 294 591 units this year alone (as opposed to 952 585 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 8 184 137 units LTD.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are perfectly flat with 2 595 units sold: that’s 66 units more than last week. Talk about a dramatic increase! The handheld sold three times more during Week 21 2018, with 6 588 units. YTD sales are now at 117 515 units (as opposed to 294 589 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 422 479 units LTD.
