[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 16, 2020 (April 13 – April 19) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, covering Week 16 and 17, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu (Week 16)

Last week was rather quiet for the Japanese market, with not a single entry in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is back at the top with no less than 286 586 units sold, which is a remarkable performance outside a holiday season. Sales are more or less flat (-2%), and with the Golden Week starting on Wednesday (May 29th), we can safely expect them to go back up next week.

As of this week, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 3 611 246 units at retail alone, and next week, it will become the best-selling Nintendo Switch game at retail. Right now, it’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 3 655 868 units sold since launch. Once again, that’s only for retail sales, but even if you factor in digital sales (which are poised to be quite high), it’s more likely Animal Crossing: New Horizons will grab the #1 spot as early as next week (if it hasn’t already).

This week, Nintendo Switch sales were still rather low, but the various evergreen titles fared pretty well: the drops are limited, between -6% and -20%.

Highlights this week include:

  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 has now sold over 200 000 (215 129 units to be precise), with 98 912 units for the Nintendo Switch version alone;
  • Super Mario Party has now sold over 1.4 million units.

Last week, Nintendo resumed shipments for the Nintendo Switch, after stopping them for a week (which led to the massive drop in sales during Week 15). Unfortunately, it’s not like they had tons of consoles to ship, as sales only saw a minor increase this week: they went from 25 313 units to 27 874 units, which is way below what it would sell under normal circumstances (even without Animal Crossing: New Horizons to boost sales).

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 40 338 units during Week 16 2019, which is part of one of the slowest periods of the year for video games sales in Japan (before and right after the Golden Week). Sales of the OG model were perfectly flat, and the increase is exclusively due to the Lite model which received a little more stock than during Week 15.

This year, the Nintendo Switch has already sold over 1.9 million units, and the 2 million units milestone could be reached as early as next week if Nintendo ship enough units. It’s definitely possible, as it seems that the company saved a lot of them for the Golden Week, which is bound to be pretty big for the console, what with Animal Crossing: New Horizons still selling like Turnips at +500 Bells each.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch had sold “only” 1 110 512 units last year after the same amount of weeks, which shows that 2020 is most likely going to end up as the peak year for the platform (quite unexpected after a really good 2019 year).

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold 13 291 610 units, with 2 124 042 units for the Lite model, and 11 167 568 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are slightly down with 1 571 units sold (vs. 1 614 units the previous week, and 3 232 units last year during the same week). Quite interestingly, it seems that even the Nintendo 3DS of all platforms is starting to suffer from shortages, though those are clearly nowhere near the same scale as the Nintendo Switch’s. YTD sales now stand at 19 585 units (vs. 97 460 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 515 732 units LTD.
