June was a pretty big month for the video games market in Japan, what with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its key launch title: Mario Kart World. The first brand new Mario Kart game in a decade is off to a fantastic start with over 1.185.000 units sold.
While most of those sales do come from the massively popular bundle, there’s little doubt Mario Kart World would have topped the charts even if we were to exclude bundled sales.
In the span of less than a month, Mario Kart World has become the Nintendo Switch 2’s very first million-seller. No doubt plenty others will follow in the months and years to come!
As for the Tamagotchi series, it made a rather remarkable comeback with Tamagotchi Plaza, which sold over 100.000 units on Nintendo Switch and 26.000 units on Nintendo Switch 2 during its launch week (around 129.000 units in total). What’s more, data from Media Create seemingly indicate that Famitsu is underestimating its sales.
Finally, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is off to a great start with 64.790 units sold on Nintendo Switch alone, and 17.730 units on Nintendo Switch (total: over 81.000 units).

Publishers
With Mario Kart World hitting the 1 million units milestone during its launch month, there was absolutely no surprise as to which publisher would sell the most games in June. Nintendo sold around 1.441.000 games during that month, with most of those sales coming from Mario Kart World.
The usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch also contributed to that total, and their sales alone would have been enough to secure Nintendo’s position at #1. This goes to show that while its successor is finally available, the Nintendo Switch isn’t finished just yet (naturally, it helps that the Nintendo Switch 2 is not only retro-compatible, but also often offers various improvements for Nintendo Switch games).
Bandai-Namco is #2 with around 161.000 units sold. Most of those sales come from Tamagotchi Plaza on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
- Nintendo: 1.441.000
- Bandai-Namco: 161.000
- Sony Interactive Entertainment: 117.000
Hardware
The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally available, and it’s off to a tremendous start in Japan with over 1.4 million units sold during its launch month. It’s a new record: no other console has ever sold that many units at launch!
Unsurprisingly, the Mario Kart World bundle was the best-selling SKU, though unfortunately, Famitsu does not provide a breakdown.
- Nintendo Switch 2 — 1.402.183
- Nintendo Switch — 78.097 (last month: 109.453)
