[Japan] Famitsu sales for First Half 2016, Top 5 publishers, Hardware sales

In its latest issue, which came out yesterday, Famitsu shared its Top 100 for the First Half of 2016 in Japan. This allows us to see which games have sold the best so far in 2016, and get a look at the state of the dedicated video game market in the country.
Unfortunately, the first Half of 2016 in Japan wasn’t all that that good. Naturally, the second half of the year is always much stronger (with the Summer holidays, and the holiday period in December), but even while taking this into account, the Famitsu data for the first Half of 2016 really is on the weak side (and the first Half of 2015 already was pretty weak to begin with).
For starters, there isn’t a single million-seller in the Famitsu Top 100 below, and the best-seller (Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3) didn’t even come close to 1 million units sold (it sold 609 603 units). What’s more, it’s not really a good sign when the best-selling game for the whole market is one that severely underperformed (compared to its predecessors).
Yo-kai Sangokushi performed surprisingly well (much better than Pokémon Conquest did back on Nintendo DS), with 539 181 units sold, which is almost as much as Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi in the first Half of 2015. This makes the sales of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura even more puzzling: when a spin-off beats expectations, you wouldn’t expect the new mainline entry to underperform…
Monster Hunter Generations sold 346 656 units during the first half of 2016, with most of the sales coming from the first few weeks of the year, and those with public holidays. As for Kirby: Planet Robobot, it’s selling pretty decently with 330 809 units in two months accoridng to Famitsu, even though its predecessor sold much better during the same period.
Monster Strike ended up selling 310 167 units during the first Half of 2016, but most of the sales come from the first few weeks of 2016. After that, the game disappeared from the Top 20, and even today, retailers still have a significant amount of unsold units (which are still not selling despite massive price drops).
Next, we have the unstoppable Splatoon, which sold 269 056 units from January to June 2016: pretty impressive longetivity for a Wii U game, but that’s something we’ve already talked about at great lengths before. Finally, Super Mario Maker also did pretty well with 240 307 units sold, but now that its Wii U Premium Pack has been discontinued, it’s most definitely not going to appear in the Top 10 for the full year.

Famitsu – Number of games for each platform
Looking at the Top 10, we can see that the Nintendo 3DS grabbed the top 4 spots, which isn’t too surprising for the main dedicated game platform in Japan.

Famitsu – Top 5 Publishers
Nintendo is the top publisher for the first Half of 2016 according to Famitsu, thanks to the steady sales of its evergreen titles (especially on Nintendo 3DS). After, its best-selling title is Kirby: Planet Robobot, which “only” sold 330 809 units.

Famitsu – Hardware
Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS (for the first time in a long while) isn’t the best-selling platform, due to various reasons. The most important one? The market is basically saturated at this point, especially with the dedicated gaming market shrinking a bit more every year. For an aging platform like a Nintendo 3DS, it’s not surprising that sales would drop.
Of course, the second Half of 2016 will be much better (especially if a price drop is announced), with the Summer holidays and the holiday period.
