Illusory Revelations #FE – Official blog post #2: toi8 (chara-designer)

Right after the April 1st/2nd Nintendo Direct, and the official reveal of Illusory Revelations #FE, the official blog (in Japanese) was opened on the game’s official website. Shinjiro Takada (Producer, Atlus) was the first to post a message, in order to talk a bit more about the game itself.

And today, a second message was posted on the game’s official blog, this time from toi8 (the main chara-designer). He explains that he and Atlus started talking about this game right after he finished working on the cover of a Visual Novel. At that point, he asked himself “What should I do next?”.

Since he’s part of the generation that grew up with the Famicom and Super Famicom (NES and SNES), Nintendo is a quite special name to him, and he was actually quite excited when he first heard about the Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem collaboration. A few years later, he’s finally able to see it come to life, right under his eyes, which is filling him with deep emotion.

He then talks a bit about the game, which is set in Shibuya. Since the backgrounds show a gorgeous world, he went with a highly saturated, yet gorgeous, look for the design of the characters. He explains that up until now, everything he’d drawn had low saturation, so this project really was a challenge of colours for him.

Illustrators often get to do “single-sheet” work (aka: a single piece of artwork, like the cover of a book for example), while designers usually have more responsibilities. He explains that he prefers the former job, but as the chara-designer for Illusory Revelations, he accepted the role of designer as a personal challenge.

He’s quite proud of what he’s been able to achieve with the help of all kinds of people. The characters and backgrounds seen in the reveal trailer is something he had never been able to do until now.

Finally, he explains that during the character designing phase, they had several discussions such as “What we should do in terms of bust size?”, and suggestions such as “They could be large and have glasses to go with them,” or “no, glasses are no good”.

Finally, here’s an artwork posted by toi8 on the official blog:

Illusory Revelations #FE (Wii U) comes out this Winter in Japan, and in 2016 in Europe and North America.
