Media Create sales for Week 52, 2015 (Dec. 21 – 27) [Top 50]

Update: this post was updated with the full Top 50 + Hardware sales for Week 52 (Media Create).

***

NB: we always use Media Create’s sales data for the weekly sales report in Japan. However, due to the New Year break, data for Week 52 will not be available until January 6th, so we’re using Famitsu’s data instead this time around. Please keep that in mind when checking out the sales data below, especially when comparing it with last week’s numbers (make sure to compare data from the same tracker, and not mix the two!).

***

This week, two games came out on Nintendo platforms in Japan, and they both underperformed. The first one is Genei Ibun Roku #FE, which sold 23 806 units during the first two days. This is roughly 40-60% of all copies sent to retailers, who will most likely have trouble selling everything without discounting the game.

There’s several reasons the game didn’t sell quite as much as Nintendo expected. The first one is the most obvious: Genei Ibun Roku #FE is definitely not the kind of game fans expected when Nintendo announced a Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem cross-over. You could almost say it’s a brand new IP,  without the selling power of Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei.

Also, it’s a JRPG (and not really the most mainstream one, to boot), a genre that is almost non-existent on Wii U. Other than Xenoblade Chronicles X and Dragon Quest X, there simply isn’t any other notable RPG available at retail on the console… Kind of hard to try and sell such a JRPG on a console known for its lack or JRPG!

Genei Ibun Roku #FEThe second entry on Nintendo platforms is Medabots 9, which sold 21 735 units during the first four days. This is a pretty poor performance, especially during the busiest week of the year. Roughly 40-60% of all units shipped to retailers were effectively sold, which means expectations were somewhat kept in check.

In the rest of the chart, everything looks like your typical Christmas week in Japan, the busiest week of the year for sales. Monster Strike is still #1 with 211 411 units sold during its second week on the market. It’s pretty clear retailers will have some trouble selling all the copies sent for launch, as 636 709 units have been sold so far. Thanks to New Year, sales should remain strong during Week 53, but they will quickly drop in early January (which means prices will also drop quickly).

As for Monster Hunter X, sales are a strong as ever: the game sold 174 061 units this week, which is +9% compared to Week 51. Monster Hunter X was already extremely popular, so it’s no wonder it sold that well during Christmas. It’s a good thing Capcom finally managed to keep up with demand in the end, as the game will end up selling over 2.5 million at retail alone before the end of the year. In fact, it most likely has already, as of writing!

And since it’s Christmas week, games on Nintendo platforms (which are among the most family-friendly on the market) performed pretty well during Week 52:

  • Yo-kai Watch Busters – 104 670 units sold, +6%
  • Splatoon – 98 096 units sold, +27%
  • Super Mario Maker – 97 281 units sold, +20%
  • Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer – 60 393 units sold, +48%
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. – 55 583 units sold, +43%
  • Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ – 46 645 units sold, +36%
  • Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2 – 44 355 units sold, +2%
  • Mario Kart 7 – 12 226 units sold, +40%
  • Super Run For Money Tousouchuu Atsumare! Saikyou no Tousou Monotachi – 11 655 units sold, +28%
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes – 11 591 units sold, +37%
  • Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival – 10 540 units sold

There’s also various games on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS ranked between #21 and #30, as you can see below. Christmas is one of the best weeks for Nintendo’s infamous evergreen titles, which never really stop selling. In fact, there’s three from 2012 in the Top 30:

  • Mario Kart 7 (bundled with Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. for Christmas, which explains why it’s ranked higher than the two titles below)
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf at #22, with 10 331 units sold;
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2 at #25, with 9 599 units sold.

Hardware-wise, both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U sold pretty well. The Nintendo 3DS sold 160 447 units during Week 52, which is roughly 13 000 units more than during Week 51. Compared to the same week in 2014, the 3DS is (naturally) down by about 58 000 units: a pretty good performance for the handheld, which was boosted by the release of the New Nintendo 3DS in October 2014.

At the end of the year, Nintendo’s handheld will be down by over 1 million units for the whole year (a drop that is quite noticeable when you look at the total amount of consoles sold in Japan in 2015 and 2014). But the Nintendo 3DS has also sold over 20 million units since launch: a feat that no other platform has been able to achieve since the Nintendo DS and the PSP.

In fact, none of the current platforms can even hope to come close to 20 millions. The only one that could (in theory) do that is Nintendo’s next handheld, but this is far from guaranteed due to how much the market has changed since the Nintendo 3DS launched. Mobile games are now supreme kings in Japan, and it’s not clear how big the market will be for dedicated gaming platforms when comes the time for Nintendo to launch its next handheld…

Finally, we have the Wii U, which enjoyed surprisingly strong sales during Christmas week, despite the Splatoon bundle completely selling out. The console sold 101 122 units during Week 52, which is 20 000 units more than Week 51, and twice as much as Week 52 in 2014 (which was pretty poor for Wii U sales).

Splatoon and Super Mario Maker have been doing wonders for Nintendo’s console, and even the lack of Splatoon bundle didn’t prevent it from selling over 100 000 units this week (something that hadn’t happened in many, many months). Of course, this is but a temporary respite: sales will drop in early January, and the Wii U will go back more “normal” levels.

But still, there’s no doubt Nintendo is pretty pleased by those sales, even if the Wii U has been beyond saving for quite a while already. One thing’s for sure: nobody really expected the Wii U to end the year on such a “high” note, with over 220 000 units more in 2015 compared to 2014!
