For most video game publishers (and especially for Nintendo, which is pretty family-focused), the Holiday period is one of the most important of the year, and this includes November (with its infamous Black Friday). According to the NPD, sales of new game software, hardware, and accessories generated $2.47 billion this year (+2% compared to 2014, with $2.42 billion). Most of that increase is due to Hardware, which saw an increase in revenue (despite price drops and bundles).

Software and amiibo

Unfortunately, Software sales did not generate as much revenue as last year: “only” $993.9 million (-%7 percent, with $1.07 billion in November 2014). This is the opposite for accessories and the toys-to-life segment, with sales on the rise: +6%, $357.7 million ($336 million in November 2014).

That being said, sales are mostly down because of previous-gen platforms (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3). Indeed, the NPD notes that November 2015 was the best month ever for Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U software (+34% compared to December 2014, now the second best month ever), though mostly thanks to Call of Duty: Black Ops III (which wasn’t released on Wii U).

Finally, Nintendo revealed that over 11 million amiibo were sold in the United States alone.

Software – Top 10

This month, there’s only one game on Nintendo platforms in the Top 10: Just Dance 2016, which sold better on Wii and Wii U. Since the NPD doesn’t provide a Top 10 with sales by SKU (instead of putting all versions of a single game together), the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS didn’t have a chance to put many games in there. After all, there’s only exclusive game in the Top 10: Halo 5!

01) Call of Duty: Black Ops III – (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC | Actvision Blizzard)
02) Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One, PC | Bethesda Softworks)
03) Star Wars: Battlefront (PS4, Xbox One, PC | Electronic Arts)
04) Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3 | Electronic Arts)
05) NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3 | Take-Two)
06) FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3 | Electronic Arts)
07) Need For Speed (PS4, Xbox One | Electronic Arts)
08) Halo 5: Guardians (Xbox One | Microsoft)
09) Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (PS4, Xbox One, PC | Ubisoft)
10) Just Dance 2016 (Wii, Wii U, 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 | Ubisoft)

Hardware

In November, Hardware sales generated $1.12 billion in revenue, which is slightly more than last year during the same month ($1.02 billion). According to the NPD, November 2015 was the best month ever in units for current-gen Hardware sales if you put together the Wii U, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.  The growth is actually faster if you don’t take into account old-gen consoles:

  • Wii U / PlayStation 4 / Xbox One: +22% in sales, 93% of overall Hardware sales (over 3 million units)
  • last-generation consoles: -76% in sales (compared to -53% in November 2014)
