[Japan] The Super Mario Bros. Movie: sales data for the home video release [Update: Week 141]

In the weeks and months following the release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan, TOHO (the Japanese distributor) shared regular updates about its box office performance.

Starting today (September 6th), the Super Mario Bros. Movie is available on Blu-Ray (and DVD), and thanks to Oricon, we have some sales data (daily and weekly) for that home video release.

This post will be updated on a regular basis with all relevant data, so keep checking back!

Total sales

The various versions of the Super Mario Bros. Movie have sold:

  • DVD: 45,487 units sold (as of May 17th 2026)
  • Blu-Ray: 4,686 units sold (as of May 17th 2026)
  • Blu-Ray + DVD combo: 76,210 units sold (as of June 9th 2024)
  • SteelBook Blu-Ray + DVD combo: 4,757 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo: 2,784 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • SteelBook 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo (Limited Edition): 1,039 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • SteelBook 4k Ultra HD + Blu-Ray combo: 790 units sold (as of September 2023)
  • Total: 138,452 units sold (as of May 17th 2026, but missing some data)

May 20th

According to Oricon, the stand-alone DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 283 units during its 78th week, which brings total sales to 45,487 units. It ranked #13 in the DVD ranking, and #2 in the Anime DVD ranking.

And as for the stand-alone Blu-ray, it ranked at #18 in the Anime Blu-Ray ranking with 59 units sold, which brings the total for that SKU to 4,686 units.

Total sales for all versions combined now stand at 138,452 units.

According to Oricon, the stand-alone DVD of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 618 units during its 77th week, which brings total sales to 45,204 units. It ranked #4 in the DVD ranking, and #1 in the Anime DVD ranking.

And as for the stand-alone Blu-ray, it ranked at #8 in the Anime Blu-Ray ranking with 108 units sold, which brings the total for that SKU to 4,627 units. The stand-alone Blu-Ray sold 1,455 units since the last time it charted, during the week ending January 12th, 2025.
