Japan: Famitsu sales for February 2020 (Software, Hardware, Publishers)

Famitsu have shared their monthly report on video game sales in Japan, this time covering February 2020 (to be more precise, the period going from January 27th to February 23rd, so 4 weeks in total).

Once again, sales were dominated by the Nintendo Switch, but it’s the PlayStation 4 that takes the top 2 spots of the Top 5 Software. Pokémon Sword and Shield was the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch, with 95 480 units: a strong performance during such a quiet month. As for Ring Fit Adventure, it sold 73 359 units, heavily impacted by shortages (demand continues to outstrip offer by a wide margin).

Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers sold about 162 000 units in total, with about 46 000 units on Nintendo Switch specifically.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s was off to a good start with 62 074 units sold during the first week. Unfortunately, SEGA ended up underestimating demand, with shortages kicking in the following week.

01./00. [PS4] Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers # <RPG> (Atlus) {2020.02.20} (¥8.800) – 115.995 / NEW
02./00. [PS4] Granblue Fantasy: Versus # <FTG> (Cygames) {2020.02.06} (¥6.980) – 102.314 / NEW
03./01. [NSW] Pokemon Sword / Shield # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2019.11.15} (¥5.980) – 95.480 / 3.445.788 (-74%)
04./03. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 73.359 / 696.005 (-42%)
05./00. [NSW] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix # <ACT> (Sega) {2020.02.13} (¥5.990) – 62.074 / NEW

Despite only one new release making it in the Top 5 Software, the Nintendo Switch still managed to grab 3 of the 5 spots of the Top 5:

NSW – 3
PS4 – 2

This month again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher with 343 000 units sold. Sales did drop sharply, but thanks to its evergreen titles, the company once again sold more games than the publishers ranked #2 and #3 combined. Atlus sold 178 000 games, pretty much exclusively thanks to Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers. As for SEGA, they’re #3 with 142 000 units, partly due to Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s.

  1. Nintendo: 343 000 units sold
  2. Atlus: 178 000 units sold
  3. SEGA Games: 142 000 units sold

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch saw a big drop in sales, from 565 573 units to 298 685 units, which is due to several factors:

  • New Year sales are included in January sales, boosting total sales during that month
  • February is a quieter month
  • shortages limiting sales (especially the OG model)

During that month, the Nintendo Switch hit another milestone: 12 million units sold since launch.
