Splatoon 2: Special demo now available for download, how to use the free Nintendo Switch Online trial (7 days)
Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that a special demo for Splatoon 2 will be available for download in March (check out this post for all the details). That demo is now available for download in Japan, Europe and North America. It’s only be playable between March 19th and March 25 (Europe, North America), and March 26th and April 1st (Japan), but by download it early, you will be able to start playing right away and avoid wasting a single minute!

This demo allows you to play the full game, and that includes the various online modes. And you get to play against other players with the full version, you’re not stuck with other players who downloaded the demo. As such, you need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play online, even with this demo.
If you don’t have one, no problem: you can get a free 7 days trial simply by downloading this demo! Here’s how it works:
- after downloading the demo, you receive an email on the address used for the Nintendo Account
- check out the email, and note down the code inside
- head over to the Nintendo eShop, and select “Enter Code” from the navigation menu
- enter the Serial Code received via email
Do note that the Serial Code for the Nintendo Switch Online trial can only be used between March 26th and April 1st, so make sure you redeem it while it’s active. Once activated, you can use all Nintendo Switch Online services for free for 7 days: online play (for all games, not just the demo!), the Nintendo Entertainment System games, Tetris 99, and more.
There’s a few things to keep in mind about this trial:
- it activates auto-renewal, and if you do not cancel it, you will be automatically subscribed to a 1 month individual plan. To cancel auto-renewal, click on the Nintendo Switch Online section of the navigation menu on the Nintendo eShop, and select Membership Options;
- you can only get one Serial Code per console, and it only works for once account
- if you already have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you will not be able to use the Serial Code (you can always give it to someone else)
